"Kya, I'm home!" A tired women said as she passed through the door, carrying a brown paper sack with her small black bag. Kya stayed in her room, pretending like she didn't hear her mother. The dark haired woman walked into the teen's room, tossing the brown paper bag into her face."Ugh Mama!" Kya said, her tone rude.
"Mine Schatz(my sweet) you're going to get cancer from that phone of yours." Her mother said in her thick German accent.
"Yeah, yeah, I know your doctor in Germany told you that phones give you cancer and to stay away from them." Kya said with irritation clear in her voice.
"And as I told you, German doctors are better than the ones here in America!" Her exhausted mother said with a grin.
"Okay, okay." Kya said, looking into the brown bag and discovering, to her surprise, a burrito. "Oh my God mom, thanks so much!"
"I asked the chef to make you his special before I left." She replied. Kya took a huge bite of the burrito with no hesitation, her mom laughing when she saw her daughter's mouth completely covered with brown sauce.
As she wipes Kya's mouth with her apron, she says, "You're still the kleines(little) kid I picked up from foster care." Kya smiled.
"Mom, two more days until adoption day!"
"Oh really?" The mother said with delight. "It's already been eight years since I adopted you. Wow, how the years go by."
"Yeah, and I'll be eighteen." Kya said with a proud stance.
"Ehrlich(really), wow you're pretty much an adult. Well, I'm going to leave you to your delicious meal my baby. I'm going to try to figure out how to pay this month's rent."
"Okay; don't forget to rest." Kya said with a sigh. Her mother walked out and she was left alone with her tormenting thoughts. She thought to herself, am I really going mad? Maybe it really is the phone. She shook her head. No, it can't be.
She decided to flip through her phone. "Oh, Trish uploaded a photo. She's so talented; I wish I could draw like that. Every time I draw it looks okay until I get to the nose. Trisha is rich, she can sing, and she can draw. All I'm good at is eating! Well, maybe I'll just go insane and live in a nut house the rest of my life." She said with sarcasm.
Kya froze, the uneasy feeling of someone watching her. She looked outside her window, and saw a shadow run by. "Now I'm definitely going insane."
"Kya, I could use your help!" Kya turned from the window and went out to help her mother. After, she went to her room, thinking, I think on adoption day I'll ask mom about my real family.
