"I'm for truth, no matter who tells it. I'm for justice, no matter who it's for or against."
-Malcolm X.
Daniel had left before I could answer his question. I was cold and wet. I went up stairs to my clean organized room. I sat down at my desk thinking. Daniel's words of danger echoed through my head. I had to do this though. I needed to know the truth of this land that I lived on. I took out my paper and finished it with the words of what Daniel told me. I don't think everyone didn't know about the United States. I revised it over and over again. Once I was done with it I heard the door slam shut. My parents were home. I shut my light off and quickly jumped into bed. I looked at the clock it was passed two. My parents walked in, turned on and off, and they left. I was thankful that I finished. I got into my pjs once I knew my parents were asleep. I closed my eyes and drifted into sleep.I woke up to the sound of my alarm clock. I began to get ready for the day. I got on some jeans and a nice shirt. Today was the day I was going to present my essay. What could go wrong? I traveled down the stairs to go. I opened the door to find Daniel sitting on the stairs. I turned to lock my door.
"What are you doing here," I asked.
"Waiting for you," he spoke. He had a small thick book in his hands.
"Well shall we go. I got to make a quick stop at the restaurant," I spoke.
"You never answered my question last night."
"You never gave me a chance."
"Toché" he smiled.
"I think you'll find out if I have chosen to take this path."
"You're nervous about it huh?"
"No and yes I am, it's difficult to say," I spoke. We walked all the way to the restaurant without saying a word. I went inside to grab a muffin. Dad was cooking.
"Morning," I spoke.
"Morning Katya. Did he walk you home last night and is he walking you to school?"
"Yeah. Is that bad?"
"No, I'm just glad someone has taken an interest in my daughter," he smiled.
"Are any muffins ready," I asked. I was mainly trying to change the subject. He took out a chocolate muffin and handed me another muffin.
"For your new friend," he winked.
"Thanks dad," I kissed him on the cheek. I took the muffins and went outside where Daniel was waiting. I through him the blueberry muffin and thankfully he caught it. He looked at it with a confused look.
"It's a muffin," I told him. There was something about him that didn't seem right.
"I know that," he spoke trying to cover something. We are our muffins on the way to school. Baylie was waiting on the steps of the school waiting for me. She eyed at me and smiled.
"What block is your English," he asked.
"Third."
"I'll see you soon then," he smiled and patted my shoulder. I didn't know how to take that. I walked up the stairs to where Baylie was.
"Who's the hot guy," she asked. I smiled to my self.
"Just another guy," I laughed.
"Katya I think he likes you," she spoke as we went in the building to the gym.
"Let's not turn this guy into another Adam," I pleaded. I had a guy who always messed with me and Baylie said he liked me. I believed her but it turned out that he was gay. I was not happy with that.
"Fine but admit that you like him," she nudged.
"I don't know. It's all confusing right now."
"Alright, but doesn't lose this one."
"Let's just get changed for the next couple of classes," I spoke. We changed into our gym clothes for archery and combat fighting. I was on the team for archery and have brought trophies home. Combat was just an extra skill. They were fun. The day went by quickly until I got to English. Charlotte went first of course.
"Katya, you go next," Mr. Graves spoke. I stood from where I was holding the paper. Should I do or should I not. I stood in front of the class. I put my paper down because I wasn't going to read all three pages I was going to get it done quickly.
"New America. How is it new? How did we as citizens become a new nation. Does anyone know?" Some of them shook their head no. "That is because people in a higher position don't want people like us to figure out how the country was. We have been brainwashed and lied to. I think knowing the truth about this is a cause." I saw Mr Graves stand and point to the door. I have done the unspeakable.
"Get out of class room," he yelled.
"Only speaking the truth sir."
"No you are not. Leave this room now." I grabbed my stuff and went into the hall ways. I felt good but I knew worse was to come.
Katya West report to the principal's office now, the loud speakers spoke. I sort of laughed but trembled. I've never been to the principal's office. In two seconds I saw smoke and the fire alarm went off. A bunch of students began to rush out of the classrooms and into the hall. I was knocked over by some kids who were terrified. I got back up and tried to figure out what exactly was going on.
"Katya," Daniel's voice called out. Thanks to my height i couldn't really see where he was. I felt someone grab my hand and me the other way. I looked at my captive to see it was Daniel. I let out breath of relief. We followed the students out to the street.
"Let's go before the police get here," Daniel whispered into my ear. I nodded. He then let go off my hand. Daniel led me down a dark alley two blocks away from the school. There was a car waiting there for us.
"Get in," He spoke. I obeyed. Once i got in Daniel started the car and drove towards the restaurant.
"Where are we going," I asked.
"Well for one we have a couple hours to kill and you look like you have gone through crap."
"Daniel that didn't answer my question."
"Oh well. I can't believe you did it," He spoke. I knew he was talking about my essay.
"Daniel what did you expect me to do? Ignore what has happened and pretend that I don't want to say something."
"Katya that's not what I meant. I'm glad you did do that. It proves something."
"Well Daniel I hope its the right thing i did," I spoke.
"It is. What time did you go to sleep last night?"
"Why do you care," I asked.
"I'm just wondering. You might every piece of strength for a while," he cautioned.
"I went to bed around three last night."
"What were you doing?"
"Thinking. Can i not do that?"
"Yes you can," he laughed. He then pulled into a driveway. "Just to warn you I have a grandpa that will say whatever he thinks."
"That's okay," I spoke.
"Katya," he seemed like he wanted to tell me something but something was stopping him. Daniel got out of the car and I followed his lead leaving my stuff in his car. We sort of sneaked through his small house and up the stairs. It was like a large bedroom with a couch and a bunch of book. There was a bed and dresser in a corner. I sat down on the couch. Daniel grabbed two glasses of something. He handed one of them to me.
"Drink," he spoke.
"What is it," I asked.
"Just some juice."
"I have a feeling that you're lying to me," i spoke.
"i am," he smiled. I smelled it just to see if I could get anything else from it. I set it down on the small table by the couch. When I sat down I felt like sleeping.
"What did you put in it," i asked
"Scopolamine," he smiled. I had just inhaled it too. He had knocked me out for some reason.
"If you're going to sleep I would like some of that couch," he smiled.
"Why did you drug me," I asked.
"Because I knew you weren't going to sleep unless i made you." Daniel sat down and I lied down to where his body was at my head. I was very surprised how this drug was working. I closed my eyes and began to sleep.
