"Keep your head down Amelia. Ignore everyone and make sure you don't get into any trouble. You made enough of it at your last school. Prove it to me that you didn't make us move just to go back to your old ways." My mother told me in the car, as we stopped in front of the new school that I was going to attend. She grabbed my shoulders, turning me to face her. "Sweetie, this is a fresh new start for us. Don't cause any trouble for Mummy alright? I managed to get this job here, and it pays well. Don't ruin it for us!" Her brown eyes shone with desperation, shaking me and squeezing my shoulders a bit too hard.
"Yes Mummy. I'm not interested in making any friends and I promise to keep out of trouble. You don't have to worry about a thing." I mumbled, my dyed dark brown hair falling in past my shoulders as I looked down.
"Good, good." My mother replied, patting my shoulders. She proceeded to pull the hood of my hoody over my head. "Keep your face hidden. Remember, as long as you remain invisible, you'll be safe. " Her eyes turned dark. "If you so much as cause a hint of trouble, you'll be on the first flight to your Dads" She threatened.
I shuddered as horrible memories flooded my mind. She was going as far as to threaten me with that?
"I won't. Really." I whispered. I have to go now or I'll be late for my orientation. Bye Mummy." I bid goodbye.
"Bye Sweetie! Don't forget, keep your head down!" She waved as I exited the car, before hurriedly driving off to get to her workplace.
I stared at the well-kept campus in front of me. With my previous outstanding school grades, I had managed to secure a scholarship into one of the most prestigious schools in the country. The huge school buildings cast a shadow over me, covering me in darkness. Where I belong.
Okay Amelia, you can do this. You are going to get through this year smoothly without any trouble, graduate and attend college somewhere far far away. There is no need for any friends, or any boys. I breathed in slowly, trying to calm down my beating heart, and almost forgetting to let out my breath. Well, here goes nothing, I thought as I hurried across the huge car park and into the air-conditioned school halls. Since it was still early, the halls were empty except for the janitor who was whistling a merry tune whilst cleaning the locker.
I wondered along the hallway, before realizing there was no way I was going to be able tot find the school office on my own without a map in the huge school. I hurried back to the school entrance to find the janitor jamming out to a popular pop song.
"I'm too hot, hot damn. Call a police and a fireman. I'm too hot, hot damn. Make a dragon want to retire man." He sang loudly, shaking his butt while mopping the floor.
"Umm, excuse me mister, I was wondering if you could give me some directions to the school office?" I asked softly.
"Huh? Little lady you have to speak louder. My old granny ears can't hear your mumbling." The janitor said before continuing to bleech out the lyrics to Uptown Funk and dancing shaking his butt in my face. "Girls hit your hallelujah, whuoo! Girls hit your hallelujah!"
"Could you give me some directions to the school office please?" I said, raising my voice louder a little.
"Huh? You want my butt! Cause Uptown Funk gon' give it to you. Cause Uptown Funk gon' give it to you." He continued.
"Directions! I need directions please!" I exclaimed loudly, almost out of breathe.
"Well why didn't you say so earlier missy? Where to?" The janitor grinned, a few teeth missing from his gums. "Cuz' this hot diva here's gonna give it to you!" He sang before spinning once and striking a Bruno Mars pose.
