They had arrived. The four boarded a boat in awe at the castle's magnificence in contrast to the starry night sky.
"Totally sick, dudes," Hurley murmured.
The shadowy figure rowing the boat said nothing at all.
"Hey-what kinda wands do you guys have?" Hurley asked suddenly.
Enigma responded automatically, "Ebony wand, with sea serpent scales in the core."
At the same time, Onyx answered, "Basalisk heart string core and a mahogany wand."
"Cool. Mine's sequoia. Core's dragon heart strings," he said enthusiastically.
Iris pointed to the castle.
"We're here!"
In their haste, they had jostled some other first years from other boats.
"Watch it," scowled a boy in scarlet robes, "some of us don't want to be trampled before the Sorting."
"Let me guess. You want to be in Gryfindor, am I right?" Onyx calmly told him.
The boy sneered, running a hand through his slick, fiery red hair.
"What's it to you? You reek of Slytherin, you and your friend," he nodded towards Hurley.
He turned his gaze to Enigma with a kind smile.
"Hey, you don't have to stay with that filth. You can hang with us,"
Enigma stared agape at him in amazement.
"You think you can just put down my friends? What's with you, we've only just met and you think you know me? Well, I hate to surprise you, but I'm of pure blood, as well."
The red-head blanched.
"Wait, what's your name? I'm Bram. I could have sworn... You look so familiar..."
"My name is Enigma, and I hope I'm not sorted into Gryfindor!"
Onyx shook his head at Bram.
"Come on, Enigma. We have a Sorting to attend, and it would be a shame to be late because of him."
She nodded, slipping her hand into Onyx's and turning away from Bram. Hurley and Iris followed, and they entered a great hall.
-----------------------------------
The headmaster said a few words, but Enigma wasn't listening. Wasn't Gryfindor supposed to be a house of brave, chivalrous people? She would rather be in Ravenclaw or Slytherin! The Sorting Hat had begun to call out names and their houses. Enigma mentally prepared herself, as she would be one of the first to be Sorted.
"Enigma Black!" the little hat boomed.
She rose, feeling all eyes on her as she steadily made her way to the front.
The ancient hat settled itself on her head comfortably.
"What an interesting mind we have here. Not Gryfindor, hmm? You could be excellent, there. What about Ravnclaw? With such a sharp mind, you wouldn't be out of place. No? Ah, I see, very clever. Resourceful, too."
The hat muttered almost to itself, spending a little more time than the others trying to figure out her mind.
"It had better be... SLYTHERIN!"
The students at the green and silver table erupted in cheers.
Smiling to herself, Enigma took her place their to watch her friends join her there.
The Sorting Hat spent anlittle time debating were Hurley should be placed, but in the end, Bram was right. Hurley sat across from Enigma, grinning. When Onyx was called, the hat barely touched his head and he was sent off to the Slytherin house. Iris soon joined them, narrowly escaping Hufflepuff.
"I told you we'd all be here," Onyx crowed, wiggling his eyebrows from his seat next to Enigma.
Enigma caught Bram staring jealously from the Gryfindor table, but she deliberately turned her back on him.
"Follow me to the girl dormitories," squawked a tall, beady eyed girl.
Enigma found Iris and waved to the boys. Since they already knew each other, they would room together.
All of Slytherin met up in the common room, decorately strictly in green and silver. It seemed comfortable enough, equipped with a large fireplace at its heart.
"Girls to the right," screeched the birdlike Prefect.
But just as the first years scaled the steps to their rooms, a silvery wisp of words danced before their eyes.
"Voldemort's heir awaits," it hissed softly.
Everyone had heard it; the hall had fallen silent when they first caught sight of the lettering.
When the silence did break, Enigma surprised herself by being the first to speak.
"But Voldemort is dead!"
The host of students murmured in agreement.
"Off to bed, the lot of you!" hissed Slytherine's head teacher.
Ms. Scathelock seemed quite young, but it was rumored she was once a Death Eater before Harry Potter had killed Voldemort.
"But..." an older kid stammered.
"Get to your rooms NOW!" Ms. Scathelock bellowed.
Suddenly, there was a frantic movement to the dormitories.
Finally, when Enigma lied in bed, she realized that Hogawarts might not be as safe as her cousin Harry had remembered. Still, excitement overcame the worry as she fell asleep pondering her first magical lesson.
-------------------------------------
"Enigma!" someone whispered urgently.
She turned sleepily, groaning, "whaa?"
Enigma opened her eyes to see Iris.
"Don't freak out, but Onyx snuck into the girls dormitory to see you."
Enigma was wide awake now.
"WHAT?!"
"Rise and shine, muffin," Onyx smirked, arms folded, "nice pajamas."
Enigma looked down. She wore a light tank top and plush pants ith shooting stars on them. Now, she was aware of how puffy her hair looked.
"Shut up."
She frowned, looking at Onyx. He was impeccably groomed, his robes in place, and his dark hair carelessly styled.
"Look away Onyx, I have to change."
Enigma ran a brush through her hair and slipped on her robes in record time.
"Okay! I'm decent. How did you get in, anyway?"
Onyx shrugged.
"I'm magical."
"Aww, you went all this way to see Enigma, how cute!" Iris cooed teasingly.
Onyx flushed, saying, "I had to know if you were okay."
"Well, I'm not okay. I'm hungry!! Let's grab some breakfast!" Enigma told them grouchily.
Iris and Onyx laughed.
In the common room, they were joined by Hurley. The group hurried to eat to begin their first official day at Hogwarts.
