My Suspicions

Winter's POV

My eyes shot open, sweat glistening across my skin. I picked up my phone to check the time.

4:27 am

I hissed as the brightness from my screen blinded me. Rubbing the backs on my hands for too long caused little white spots to dance before them. Outside the cracks of lightning and thunder made me become fully awake. I heaved out a sigh and began to binge watch YouTube videos. It was Saturday, two days before prison began, also known as school.

I laughed at my favorite Youtuber's videos. I bit down on my pillow so I couldn't wake up my family. The pillow tasted weird so I let it go. Bad idea. I snorted so loudly, my laugh echoed throughout my room.

You know when you're not allowed to laugh and you laugh even more? That's exactly what happened to me.

The thunder blocked me out since it got stronger which I was thankful for. The rain hit my window with noisy splatters. Deciding it was a good time I checked my Facebook. I got so many unread messages. I couldn't really read them so I texted my brother. He was always awake at this hour watching Netflix. Casually walking in after a few minutes he sat down next to me on my bed.

"What's wrong?" He asked.

"Can you read these for me?"

"Sure" My brother gave me a short reply.

He read over the messages and a sad look washed over his face.

"It's still early, you should sleep for a little longer" He told me.

"But what did they say?" I eagerly asked.

Nathan let out a long sigh before continuing.
"If someone at school bothers you come and tell me okay?"

"Sure, but-"

"We have some classes together so I'll be with you."

"Wait, Nathan what did they say?" I urged.

He shook his head and handed me my phone. He still sat next to me on the bed, and looked over my shoulder at my phone. I kept furrowing my eyebrows together to make sense of the words in front of me.

People think having dyslexia means you can't read or anything like that. That's not true, we use a different part of our brain to understand what we are learning or reading. The words are either spaced out in the wrong places or pushed together to create a jumble of a mess. I can read them or have a hard time.

"Nathan, please read it to me! My brain is going to pop" I cried in frustration.

"It's better if you don't read them."

I huffed out a "Fine" and dropped it. He ruffled my hair and got up.

"Want to hang out in the kitchen with me?" He asked.

"Sure" I replied.

The house was still dark, the flashes of lightning gave us light to make our way to the kitchen.
I sat on the stool the island had to offer. Nathan moved about, pulling out a small pot, taking a few ingredients out, he turned on the stove and placed the pot over it and pouring milk inside. I smiled as my brother made his famous hot chocolate.

"School is in two days" Nathan told me.

"I know, don't remind me" I groaned.

"This year I won't leave your side" Nathan promised.

"Don't make any promises you can't keep" I muttered.

I slipped off the stool and walked over to the window. My hands made prints on where I placed them, my breath fogged up the glass into an uneven circle. Oh, Washington and the weather you bring us. I heaved a sigh and was about to turn when something caught the corner of my eye. Something or even a someone was running around in the streets. It was hard to see the person since the lightning could make anything a shadow. My eyes squinted more to try to make out the person. No luck. My staring probably became intense since Nathan came along and stood next to me.

"What are we staring at?" He whispered.

"We are looking at-"

I gasped and held Nathan's arm as the figure stopped and looked at our direction. Or so I thought. My senses were tingling, I hope it's not the person I've been dreading.
