Today was the day Maggie's mom would take her to get a new book! Every month her mom takes Maggie to go look for a book, since they don't have enough money to go every week, that is what Maggie waits for. She always tries to savor her books, and read slowly through them, but they are to good to put down. Sometimes her mother even catches her asleep with the book still clutched in her hands.

While she was walking in the halls, she didn't care if people snickered and laughed at her as she hurried past them. All through her classes she had a smile on her face, and couldn't help to wonder what book would choose her. When she got home her mother was happy too. They would spend hours at the bookstore and eventually find the perfect one. The bookstore was just around the corner. It was called Mr.Richards Book Collection.

They set off on their five minute journey and place that was like their second home. Mr. Richards owned a thrift book store. He was a plump man in his 60s who always would give them discounted prices. The store included all the books he had and could never get rid of. He had many books to Maggie and Marys taste.

When they got to the bookstore they saw Mr. Richards loading book by book onto the back of a truck, handling each one with the gentlest of care. Maggie and her mother looked astonished. " Mr Richards!" yelled Maggie. He looked up with a solemn face looking as though he hasn't slept for weeks. "What happened?" asked Mary. Mr Richards replied, "Now one visits my store any more with the exception of a few friends I have kept over the years. I don't have enough money to continue my businesses anymore. The government is going to tear down this bookstore and put in a collection of apartments. " That can't be!" exclaimed Maggie. "That's the way life is," he told her. The world isn't the way it used to be anymore.

Maggie was very upset that Mr Richards was leaving because she always loved going to his shop and picking out a book of her choice. Maggie's mom tried to comfort her but it was no use. " Where will we get our books now?" Maggie asked. Mary replied, "I don't know sweetie, we'll just have to make the best of things. Maggie looked back at Mr. Richards. He had a book in his hands. Walking over to her he whispered, "I want you to have this one last book. Maybe it can change something." Before he turned around, he smiled and gave her a small wink.
