We've known for quite some time. Three years to be exact. Doctor McCourt told us she wouldn't have long in the beginning, but she lasted more than they expected. Two years more than he thought.
-Three Years Ago-
"Kandice, stop worrying. Please," Amanda said soothingly. I was pacing back and forth throughout the room, waiting for Doctor McCourt to come back with results was nerve wrecking.
"Amanda?" Doctor McCourt said knocking on the door, opening it a little.
"Come in," Amanda replied smiling. She was always more collected than I.
" I have some bad news. These sicknesses you've been getting are worse than we thought," the doctor said with a hardened expression on his face.
"I can take it, I'm a big girl," Amanda said giving a half-hearted smile.
"It's Leukemia."
That's when I felt the tears. My bestfriend, the only person I had left in my life, had Leukemia.
"Am I going to die?" Amanda asked, choking back tears. Always trying to stay strong, for me.
"It's hard to say, you're a healthy fifteen year old right now. Besides your high white blood cell count everything seems to be in place. Amanda, before we make any conclusions, you're going to get worse. a lot worse. You're going to have to be ready, you're a strong girl, I know you will be," Doctor McCourt said trying to be comforting.
"Give me an amount of time, I know you must have calculated something. Don't spare me. Like you said, I'm strong, I can take it," my bestfriend said, her green eyes holding back the look of fear.
"Maybe a year," Doctor McCourt said clutching his clipboard until his knuckles were white. You would think it would be easy telling patients this type of stuff, maybe it just got harder.
"A- a year?" Amanda asked, and there were no holding back tears now. From her, nor I.
"Amanda, nothing can be for certain. Here's some sheets on medicine I'd like you to get, and when we will start your chemo therapy routines," Doctor McCourt said handing me a sheet, "I'm sure Kandice will bring you and be with you through this whole ordeal."
"And I will," I spoke, my voice cracking some; considering it was the first thing I'd said since the news.
"Good, I'll see you two in two weeks," Doctor McCourt said escorting himself out.
-Back To The Present-
"Your hair is getting to a nice length. I forgot it was even blonde," I joked, sitting at another therapy session for Amanda.
"No ones hair can be as long as yours, Kan. Especially when they've only been growing it back for a year now," Amanda said sticking out her tongue, "I'm starving. Will you go and get some food for me, so I can have it to eat afterwards?"
"Of course, the usual?" I asked picking up my keys.
Amanda nodded. I walked to the elevator and went down to the lobby. Before The elevator stopped I made sure to pull out my phone and update Amanda's parents, like I did after every therapy session. Unfortunately, this led me into ramming this poor guy almost over.
"I am terribly sorry. I should have been paying more attention-" I stammered on apologizing, when I realized this beautiful blonde guy standing over me, with a confused look on his face.
"Its fine, really," the guy said, breaking the look on his face into a smirk.
"Hey, man, come on this is your first important. You can't be late!" some curly dark headed guy said to the blonde guy pushing him along.
