Nick’s POV:
Leaning back against the bins round the back of the school, I looked around the group of lads I was hanging with. Some were older than me, others were in my year, and there was one who looked a year older than Susie. He shouldn’t be here. Heck, I shouldn’t be here!
I should be practising for my gig tonight.
Yeah, I’m a real rock star. My guitar and I are playing a local pub tonight, and I should be practising in the music block for that, not palling around with these yobs. They were up to something not right, but I wouldn’t grass on them even if they were.
Anyway, grassing on them would be grassing on me. The rest of school was bad, but not as bad as last period, so I skived. Plus, Johnny Robins said he had something to ‘show me’.
“Did you get the stuff?” Johnny Robins, lad in my year, bad news all over, asked one of the others. He shrugged, and another guy produced a small package and showed it round, proud of what he’d ‘accomplished’.
“Oh yeah mate! That’s what I’m on ‘bout!” Johnny grinned, snatching it off the other guy. His fingers stroked the package, and if I was a chick, I woulda rolled my eyes and sighed by now. But I wasn’t. I was a guy, and I had to deal with it the ‘Guy way’.
“Bagsie first go!” One of them called out, but Johnny shook his head, his greasy blonde hair falling in front of his eyes.
“Nah, already promised it to little Petey-boy here, din’t I?” Johnny said, putting an arm around the smallest boy’s shoulders and shoving him into the middle of the circle. A few lads made comments and wolf-whistled, but Johnny’s two fingers told them where to stick it.
I distinctly remembered Susie saying something about a Peter, and I assumed this guy was the ‘Hottie’ Susie had described. I could see the fear in his eyes, and I for one was not gonna let him smoke whatever this stuff was- Either Grass or Weed, one or the other, or knowing Johnny Robins, both.
“No way Johnny, you leave Pete out of your drug horde” I warned, squaring up to Johnny. He was at least an inch taller than me, but he was thin and weedy, and I’d easily be able to floor him.
“Keep your voice down Nicky!” Johnny hissed, his breath stinking of smoke and beer “Someone might hear!”
“Hope they do. Get you locked up with all the other thugs”
“Bring it Nicky-boy. I’ll be going down a rebel, you’ll go down a grass, a squealer, a tattle-tail, a-“
“I’m a Tattle-tail? Seriously Johnny, aren’t you a bit old for fairy tales?” I asked him, and he clenched his fist. He looked me in the eye, his jaw clenched, and we heard the bell for end of the day. Yeah, we skived last period, for this.
Skiving school wasn’t an issue. I done it a few times before and I didn’t see the harm in it. Art wasn’t important to me anyways, then again, neither was this, but I’d rather be arguing with Johnny Robins than stuck in an Art room.
Huh, I guess I didn’t have to do my homework this morning anyways.
This morning...My mind was sent back to her...Meeting her... She was so amazing and beautiful, with her blonde hair, her cheeky smile, her eyes, everything about her. I’d probably never see her again, but still. I could fantasise about her all I wanted.
“Nick? Nick, are you here? Nick, it’s end of school, it’s time to go!” Susie’s voice echoed around the bins, and as if by magic, she appeared. She saw me, then everyone else, and I saw her see Peter, and blush. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, and he smiled at her.
