Numbers. That was what she knew him as. His display name most everywhere was No. 78921 but with her dyscalculia, Maddie couldn't handle it. So, she called him Numbers. In return, he had seemingly taken to calling her "Mad Max," or just "Mad."
Numbers was an odd duck in Maddie's eyes. She had met him on World of Warcraft in 2010 and they swapped Skype names and added each other shortly after. She had known him for almost three years now, and she still didn't know his name or how he looked or really anything. Only that he lived somewhere in London.
He never told anyone anything, even in the Skype group compiled of members of their guild, nobody knew a thing about Numbers.
After a while, most of their clan drifted towards other games, but still kept in touch via other various medias. It made Maddie happy; they were pretty much the only group who still accepted her throughout the years.
The group was all boys. Everyone had assumed Maddie to be a boy when they met her, simply under the rule "no girls on the internet." After a while, everyone finally realised she was for real (or atleast a gifted liar), but Numbers wouldn't have any of it. He still insisted she was male, even saying the photos she used of herself on Skype were of "his sister." She wasn't bothered by it, and it even turned into a joke between them.
The day before Maddie's graduation, she turned her phone on and scrolled through her messages on Skype. Nothing too interesting, most everyone wishing her well, but a message from Numbers caught her attention. When she pressed her thumb against his name, she read the one-line message out loud.
