The Burden

Newt slowly opens his eyes and looks around. 'What happened?' he thinks to himself as he begins to sit up. 'The last thing I remember I was in the Maze and-' and that's when a shooting pain shoots up his leg. He lets out a loud cry of pain and leans back against the hut. Jeff walks in, raising his eyebrows. "Looks like you're awake," he says dryly. Newt scowls. "Yes I'm bloody awake! Where's Minho?" he asks hurriedly.

Jeff lets out a small laugh. "He's outside. Hasn't been in that shuck Maze since your little incident. Which you'll have to explain once Minho and Alby get here." Fear punches Newt in his stomach. He'd have to tell them why he's hurt. Newt sighs. "Whatever. Just get them here so I can get this over with," he says sharply.

As if on cue, Alby and Minho come walking in. Minho smirks. "Is our sleeping beauty awake now?" he says with a small laugh. Though the laugh sounds forced, it's still familiar to Newt and its familiarity is comforting. Newt forces a small, but pained smile. Alby, however, is less welcoming. "Jeff, get outta here. Newt has some explainin' to do." Jeff nods and leaves the hut.

Alby shoots Newt a piercing gaze. "Explain what happened back in the Maze," he growls while raising his eyebrows. Minho glares at Alby. "What's up with you? You're being a shuck jerk." Minho looks back at Newt. "Just tell us what happened, Newt." Newt bites his lip and looks at the floor. "It- It wasn't how you thought, I think." Minho nods slightly. "Just say it," he says dully. Newt closes his eyes and begins.

"I ran away from you guys in the Maze. Climbed halfway up the Cliff. Then jumped," he says, his short, emotionless clips of sentences not matching his, cracking, pained voice. Minho and Alby widen their eyes, unable to form words. Alby is the first one to speak. "Well that was shucking STUPID!" he shouts, scowling. Minho glares at him again. "Quit being such a jerk, man!" Minho glances over at Newt, then back at Alby. "I think it's best if you leave the two of us alone for now." Alby opens his mouth to speak, but leaves the room with a sigh.
