It'd been a couple of months since I'd discovered the news, and I knew I couldn't hide it from everyone forever. I placed a hand on the small bump forming above my pelvic bone. Time to break the news to my sister. Though I had gotten a proper job, knowing I was expecting and alone, I still didn't know how to care for a baby.
I plopped myself down in front of the 10 year old girl. She was my sister and though she is still young, I often forget how old she actually was. She was pretty tall for her age, but not tall enough to be made fun of. While everyone else in the fifth grade was 4'9, she was at 5'0. I looked at her hoping that I wouldn't throw up while I spoke to her. I was tired of the morning sickness, but it was the price I had to pay for succumbing to Kellin's pleas the night of the party. It's been two months since I found out I was pregnant. I hadn't spoken to Kellin during that time period either. I opened my mouth. This was the moment I would tell the future aunt about her upcoming niece, or nephew.
"Connie," I started, my voice shaking slightly. You've always wanted to be an aunt, as you have been dreaming of it since the third grade."
"Uh, yeah, Mallory, your point is?" she questioned.
"Connie, or should I say aunt Connie..."
"Are you saying..." she interrupted.
"Yes, Connie, I'm pregnant."
She stopped and stared at me, completely in awe of what I'd said. "Mallory", she started, disappointment laced through her voice. "I don't know what to say. I'm happy, but in a way, I'm a little disappointed in you for, You know, doing what you did." I shuffled my feet and bowed my head in shame. I couldn't believe that I was being disciplined by a 10 year old. I was so ashamed I couldn't even look at her, knowing that she possibly had more knowledge than I in this situation. Suddenly I found myself hyperventilating, struggling to hold back the turkey sandwich I gobbled down.
"I'll be back," I said to Connie. I turn and ran through the halls to the bathroom, making it just in time to the toilet. I threw up my lunch and dry heaved until I knew there was no more. I got up and flushed the toilet. Connie clicked her tongue from the door frame as I rinsed my mouth. She leaned on the frame with her arms crossed
"This is a going to be a very long nine months," she said pushing off. I turned off the water and dried my face.
"Actually, it's seven," I said sheepishly. She rolled her eyes and went into her room.
