Imagine the world without one thing. Something you couldn't live without. May it be sound, color, or even the lack of seeing at all. It could even be a person. Just do whatever matters to you most.
Imagine how hard life would be without that one thing. It would seem impossible, but some people live without it everyday.
Take sound for example. There are deaf people everywhere. They are at your jobs, schools, and grocery stores. They may even be your neighbor. But every single day they live their lives without sound, in complete silence. Some are born deaf, some became deaf slowly, some became deaf in a split second, and some are even becoming deaf right now.
Just listen for a second. You probably hear voices in another room, your air conditioning turning on, a door shutting, a door opening. Sound is everywhere, but not everyone has it.
Everyday things, like sound, are taken for granted. But that is what people do, they take things for granted. There is cost to that, and that is that people don't know what they have until they lose it forever. Me, being deaf, learned this at a young age. I was about 7 years old when I lost my hearing.
Though not being able hear is hard, it also gives you life lessons that most people who can hear, don't understand.
Like let's say that being deaf was an everyday thing, and being able to hear was unnatural. Those values that deaf people gained from being deaf would be lost, and the hearing people would gain those lessons. You see what I'm saying.
But you don't have to be deaf to gain those values. Just learn from everyday life. Because everybody has something that defines them. Shapes them to be who they are.
I am deaf. Sometimes I love it. Sometimes I hate it. But it defines me. This silence is what keeps me alive, but it's killing me. I have so much to say, but so few people listen. The thing that defines me, is restricting me. It is following me. It is surrounding me. It is suffocating me. This thing that holds me close, is holding me back.
And it is deafening.
