Phil wasn't always deaf, he knew the sounds of cars, people's laughter, the sound of his mom cooking. He lost it all when he was 10, he remembered the last noise he heard, the silence. He was in bed and it was quiet, that was the last noise he heard. The silence is an actual noise though people think when you're deaf you only hear the silence. But no because to Phil, the silence was an actual noise, and it's a noise he wanted to hear so badly, just once more.
He remember waking up that morning hearing nothing it terrified him, and there was a difference between silence and nothing. This was nothing. It confused him and he talked, clapped, coughed... Nothing. He started knocking everything in his room over, trying to make the loudest noises he could to prove that this wasn't real, but nothing. And instead of going to his parents room he went down to the kitchen.
He turned on the sink, the microwave, the stove, he needed to hear something. He began to break plates while screaming, slamming his hands on the table. He was about to throw the chairs when he felt arms wrap around him and turn him around.
"Phil what's wrong?" She said, but he couldn't understand her
"I can't hear anything" he said as he started to cry, he hoped his words were clear, because he couldn't hear his own voice anymore. His mom got concerned quickly and noticed how he was shaking so much, and he had started having a panic attack.
He didn't remember much besides being in the hospital for a while, clapping every once in a while to see if his hearing had magically came back. It never worked, each time he heard nothing and it got him angry.
His mom would smile at him, because that's all she could really do. Or she would say 'I love you' very slowly, and he would only smile even though he was in pain.
The days went by painfully slow, Phil was secretly hoping he would just die. He spent most of his days playing games or watching tv, he didn't even want the captions to be on, it was just a bigger reminder of why he was here. He would just pretend that he was wearing headphones that blocked out every noise but that thought only made him more depressed.
Years went by and he got used to it, he got used to hearing nothing and accepting the fact that he will never hear anything, not even the silence. And he wasn't ever okay again, he wasn't sure if he was ever gonna be okay.
And since he was deaf, he would have to do what every deaf person does, learn sign language. His family was right by his side learning as well, he found it quite fascinating that this is how he was going to have to communicate. He did go to speech therapy since he wanted to continue using his voice only for emergencies. His dad hated hearing his voice which is why he only now used it for emergencies.
They say being deaf can lead to depression and they were right, Phil was depressed. The last few years, he had been dying a little inside.
