THIRD PERSON POV

Dan Howell doesn't actually enjoy staying up until the ungodly hours of the morning. No, if he had it his way, he'd have been asleep hours ago. If it wasn't for the almost too reliable internet and the seemingly endless supply of anime and cooking shows he'd yet to watch, he might even have a functional sleeping schedule. The second he gets his hands on his laptop, he's on Tumblr. And the second he's on Tumblr- oh look- it's three in the morning! Time to close the laptop and go to sleep, right? Wrong. It is in this exact moment that the white noise in his mind awakens, and it drives him wild. His mind becomes both a raging war zone and an exotic escape, both competing for dominance until it ultimately leaves a void of nothingness in its path. Its not really a sad feeling; it doesn't hurt or do any mental damage. Still, its not exactly the best thing to feel at the dead of the night.

According to the digital clock across the lounge, it was now 5:11 (or 5:17, at this hour whether that was a one or a seven would remain unknown). The nightly existential crisis had subsided long before, and now he was left with a groggy, burning sensation that clung to his eyelids like a wet t-shirt to skin. At this point there was simply no use in denying the dark circles that seemed to be burning into the underneath of his eyes, as they were probably already beginning to resemble the night that encased him. If he hadn't been so tired, the darkness that seemed to cling to his core would have unnerved him. If he hadn't been so tired, he would have made the effort to walk to his room instead of attempt at getting comfy in his sofa crease. alas, his mind was far too muddled with the desire to close his eyes and drift off to the world of sleep.

And so he did.

_

Dan had always been quite a light sleeper, so his clumsy  flatmate throwing a heavy duvet overtop him at the brink of dawn was definitely not something he'd sleep through.

He did everything he could to make sure Phil didn't know that, though. While he was sure he had meant nothing by the gesture, he could only imagine how awkward it'd be if Phil knew he was awake during the entire event. Dan was hardly able to establish conversation at his finest, so there was no way he'd trust himself to speak during such a domestic situation. Surely he'd confess to something nothing short of embarrassing, anywhere from the fact that he forgot to water Phil's cactus today to the fact that he's been in love with his best friend for the past six years.

Suddenly, Phil seemed  to give up on tucking Dan in properly and settled for leaving the duvet half on the floor. Not that he blamed him, it was late an this was quite a big blanket to be hauling around, but Dan almost instantly missed the way he could feel Phil's closeness burning into him. Every time Phil's hands had accidentally brushed against his skin while fumbling with the duvet he had to make a conscious effort to even his breathing. God, he was whipped.

Phil wasn't gone, though. Not yet. Dan could still actively feel his eyes bore into him from no more than a full six inches away. His heart thudded in his chest as he thought about his friend's strange behavior. Sure, it's not as if they didn't have a touchy feely relationship, but this whole give-the-other-a-blanket-and-watch-them-sleep aspect was definitely new. Shouldn't he be getting some sleep, too?
