I know I said I would never step back in Ava’s house again, but unfortunately I had to. She invited Mariah and I to her social since her pop-Latino song reached #1 on Billboard’s Top Ten and her album went double platinum, and we couldn’t say no. It was an all-white party and we had to get dressed up. I decided to wear my all white tux with a white bowtie.
“Are you ready to go?” Mariah asked and picked up her white purse that was on the table.
“No, I don’t really want to go, but I don’t want you to go alone, so I guess I have to,” I was still upset about what Ava did that previous week, but I KNEW I couldn’t tell Mariah about it.
Mariah and Ava had been getting along great since they first met, and she’s even started calling her ‘mom’ and spends more time with her and Darius, so I knew I couldn’t mess that up.
I looked at Mariah in her white strapless dress that came to her knees, and waited for her to finish putting on her pink lipstick and earrings. She looked stunning, but I had no real feelings for her anymore since I found out Audri was still alive. All I wanted was to be with Audri and have our family together finally, but I still hadn’t gotten the courage to break up with Mariah. But, I planned to do it that next day for sure.
“Daddy, don’t go!” Naima yelled while running downstairs with Darius right behind her.
They were both in their pajamas. My mom was going to be watching them for the night.
I knelt down to her level and held out my arms, “I’ll see you later, baby. You have Darius here to keep you company now.”
She hugged me, “Are we still going to Disney Land tomorrow?”
“Yeah, are we?” Darius chimed in.
“Yes, I promise we will,” I said and hugged her again, “I have another surprise for you tomorrow too.”
“What is it?” she asked and a wide smile spread across her face as she jumped up and down, “Tell me! Tell me!”
“I can’t tell you now. It’s a surprise. You’ll find out tomorrow. But for now, it’s bedtime, so the two of you need to get back upstairs.”
They both groaned, “Okay, goodnight.”
Mariah gave Darius a hug and kiss and we soon left.
“Chris, can I ask you something,” Mariah said during the long, quiet car ride.
I didn’t really feel a connection to her like I used to. I knew she could tell the difference in how I was behaving.
I was driving, “Sure, what is it?”
“You’ve been acting really distant lately. Is there something wrong?”
I looked at her for a quick second, “No. Nothing’s wrong. I guess I’ve just been really stressed.”
“Why? Maybe I could help. You don’t talk to me like you used to. I can sense something’s wrong.”
“Mariah, I can assure you, nothing’s changed. I’m fine; we’re fine. If something was wrong, I would tell you,” I lied.
This was the perfect time to tell her how I really felt and what’s been going on, but I chickened out.
“Okay,” she leaned over and kissed my cheek, “Good.”
We reached Ava’s house, and there were A LOT of people there. Cars were lined up all around the house inside the gate and people dressed in white were walking up to the doorstep so we followed.
Once we got inside the house, I couldn’t help but remember what Ava had done to me. I could never look at her the same again. I hadn’t spoken to her since then, and hoped to avoid her tonight too.
