In school, we weren't taught basic US history, European history, world history, or even history from any specific country. We were just taught about how corrupt the world was and how our king came and fixed all that.
Let me give you a small explanation. No one really knows 100% what the world was like before the Vampires came and took over, all they told us was that it was chaos until King James came into rule.
King James was a Vampire, and he pretty much united the whole world. He was a farmer, who's mate had died before they could have any children. Before you ask- yes, Vampires can reproduce, but they can only do so with their mate.
A mate is pretty much the same thing as a soul mate. They're chosen for you before you're born, but Vampires can actually tell who their mate is. Humans can somewhat feel the connection, but only if their mate is a Vampire. A Vampire has to wait until they're 180 to be able to find their mate, and humans have to wait until they're 16 to be discovered.
Yes, a human can be mates with a Vampire, but as soon as they're discovered to be mates, the human is found by the Vampire, they have to be turned into a Vampire themselves to go through something called the mating process.
The mating process is the non-physical part of the wedding. If a Vampire has a human mate, the first thing he has to do is turn her into a Vampire or else the human could die. After the human is turned, they need at least two weeks afterwards to get used to their new abilities.
After two weeks, they have to plan out the whole wedding for at least three weeks without seeing each other, to make their vows more meaningful. After the exchanging of vows, both people have to do something called marking each other. Both people have to bite each other necks and drink a bit of their blood, this sends off a force around both people(s), so that all others know that they're are already mated. After the mating process, both can reproduce together and are required to spend the rest of eternity together- sounds like torture if you ask me.
We're getting off topic. Basically King James' mate was killed by a group of humans, so the King decided to use his anger to untie the world or some stupid junk like that- make the humans and the Vampires get along or something.
He named himself king but forgot that he needed an heir, so he decided to do what is now considered the Vampire equivalent of adopting. On his way home from a meeting in one of the cities late one night, King James found a young boy named Nathaniel bleeding to death in an alley. Showing mercy, King James kept him alive for a couple more minutes to find out more about who the boy was. When he discovered that the boy came from a poor abusive home, and that was the reason he was so close to death, the king decided to take him in and thought that he would be a good heir.
As a few years went by, King James realized that his immortality might become a problem. With the fact that he had an heir and the fact that time and power can corrupt the mind, King James decided that when his son reach the age of 240, he would step down so that his son would get his chance to be king. Whenever the king stepped down, it would pretty much be the same equivalent of their retirement unless the king required their wisdom.
The adopting of an heir later became a tradition in the family, seeing as all of their mates had died before they could have children, or were just never found at all. Some people say that their blooding line is cursed because of this.
As for me, I hope they are, and that it leads to their downfall. I know what you're thinking, if they created such a good world, why?
Unlike what the royal family believe, the Vampires and humans still don't get along. We go to school and work together, but that's about it. The Vampires only see us as feeding bags, and we only see them as work machines for the jobs that are too dangerous for us. If you go to the park, the Vampires have one side and the humans have the other.
My name is Rosalie Jones, I come from a from a small farming community. I hate the Vampires more than any girl in my community- especially our current king and prince.
When I was five my older brother, Conner, had just turned 17 when he was called to the palace. It had always been his dream to go work at the palace as a royal guard and serve the kingdom. When he was finally able to get there, Conner was horrified to find out that King Xavier had been torturing some of the lesser human criminals, like bread thieves. Conner wrote to us about it, but he was soon discovered and sentenced to life in the dungeon by Prince Alexander. We no longer know if he's alive anymore.
I had always been close with Conner, and he had promised me that when he got to the palace he would take us with him and we'd be able to escape our unfortunate life. Saddly that day never came, he didn't have time to work his way up enough for our family to even come close to getting off of our farm.
I've hated both the king and the prince ever since. I swore to myself to never obey their rules, to never give up fighting them, to never lose Conners goals.
When it was announced that the Prince would be turning 180 and every human girl between the ages of 15 and 18 were required to attend for the slave choosing, I knew I was going to be required to attend. I had turned 15 eleven months ago, and had been dreading the possibility of this day since Conner went missing.
I came up with a plan in case the prince tried to choose me. King Xavier and Prince Alexander both feel a need for order in their lives, they hate and dismiss anyone who dares to disobey them. If I just act like I'm defiant and like I don't want anything to do with being here, there's a good chance that I won't be picked.
Even when I'm not picked, I'm going to slip off and sneak around the palace to try to find Conner. I want to find my brother- no, I need to find my brother. If I find him, I'll know that my promises to him mean something and that all of his work wasn't all for nothing.
Conner would be ashamed of me if I didn't fight the Prince and the King until the end, so that's what I'm gonna do. And I'm also gonna uphold one more value he didn't have- I'm never gonna fall in love with a Vampire, especially the Prince, even if he or one is my mate.
Vampires ruined my life. They stole my brother, they forced my family onto a farm, the royal family wants me to chance being a slave. Give me one good reason not to uphold those values?
Give me one good reason not to hate them?

I know I changed some stuff and strayed a bit from the original premises of Vampire mates, but I wanted this story to have a small amount originality.
Updates might be a little late on chapters since I'm a Freshman in high school and tend to procrastinate, but I will try to update as much as possible
