The ride to the palace was long, and I mean long. As we pulled up to the palace, I couldn't help but take in the view.

The walls were built with large white stones, not marble; it was less valuable, but just as beautiful. The walls were lined with ruby, and glowed as the lights of the palace shined through the windows. As we walked through the doors, the windows were lined with crystals, the floor was made of actual marble, there was a long red carpet, leading from the doors and up the stairs. Portraits of the royal family hung along the walls- all the way from King James and Prince Nathaniel, to King Xavier and Prince Alexander.

I find it weird how the royal family has never once had a female in any of the portraits. I know that all the past Kings have had to adopt, but most of them still had wives. Even if they had to adopt, she was still part of the royal family.

We made our way through a bunch of twisting and turning hallways until we finally reached the ballroom. The first thing I did when I was go to the food. I'm not a big fan of fancy dances, like the waltz. Besides, this is the palace, how often am I going to have a chance to eat food like this?
I was eating a creme puff and watching the people dance around the room, when I felt a light tap on my shoulder. I turned around and saw a ginormous man standing right next to me. I couldn't tell exactly who he was, but what I could tell was that he was smoking hot. He was well built, and his facial features were defined. His hair was dark brown and well cut, his eyes were as green as the plants from the gardens surrounding the palace.

He wore a black formal suit a rose in his pocket, and a red mask covering most of his face. All of the guys were, it was a way for the Prince to meet the girls and make it easier for him to choose his slave, without the girls freaking out or making an attempt to avoid being his slave.

"Excuse me," he said, in a low, sexy voice that made my knees tremble. "I couldn't help but notice that all you've been doing this whole time is eating and watching the others dance, why is that?"

I slowly the remainder of food I had left in my mouth. This guy may have been a Vampire, but I can't deny when a super sexy guy is talking to me. "I live on a farm with my parents," I said. I'm only going to be here one night, and it's not like I'm going to be meeting this guy again anytime soon. What's the point in keeping secrets when there's nothing to lose. "We can't afford nice food, so I'm savoring it while it lasts. Besides, I hate dancing."

"Well maybe you just need the right partner." He said extending his hand. Was this guy asking me to dance with him? After I just told him I don't like to dance? What happened next even caught me by surprise.

"Sure," I replied, my voice wavering. I took his hand and we moved to the center of the dance floor. He placed his hand on my waist, just as I placed mine on his shoulder. We slowly started moving around the room, never taking our eyes off of each other.

"What do you think of the ball so far?" The man asked, still keeping his eyes on me.

"I couldn't really care less," I replied, nonchalantly "I hate this place, and the King and Prince especially."
"Hush," the man said, quieting me down "If either of them hear you..."

But I didn't wait for him to finish before I cut him off. "I could care less if they heard me. They're the reason my family is suffering so much, and I'm not just gonna let them tell me what to do"

The mysterious man tilted his head to the right, observing me and what I just said "You're a little spitfire, you know that?"

"Thank you," I said, holding my head up high, taking him aback a little bit. "I take pride on being myself, even if it does risk my life."

The song ended, the men and women thanked each other with a bow from the men, and a curtsey from the girls.

"Well miss," the mysterious man said "It has been a pleasure dancing with you, and I wish you all the best of luck in the choosing."

"Thank you," I replied, "It has been a pleasure dancing with you as well." I made my way back over to the food, and continued watching as everyone mover around. At the same time, though, I wasn't actually watching them. The whole time, my mind was on the mysterious man.

I could tell he was a Vampire. All Vampires smelled like fruit, even the poor ones. It was how we were able to tell them apart from humans. It was one of the flaws/perks that came with being one of them. On the one hand you smelled good all the time, on the other you couldn't without your prey smelling you first.

I'm not gonna lie- he was the most handsome man I've ever met, even if he was a Vampire. For the rest of the ball, the only person I had on my mind was the mysterious man I had first danced with.

Until I heard the sound of the trumpet. That could only mean one thing. The one moment every girl here had been dreading. It was time for the choosing.
