''Melanie?'' I glance up at Ethan. I know he should know, but I can't say it. It would make it real. And I just wanted everything of my past to be over. I was tired of running, tired of facing a loveless marriage and my awful mother in law. This just wasn't how the story goes, there was supposed to be a happily ever after. ''Melanie? What is it?'' Ethan brings me back to reality, again. And I take a deep breath. He takes my clammy hands and stares at me with concern. I wish he wouldn't. I wish he would just look away, so I didn't have to stare into the eyes of one of the best people I know and tell him I've been keeping a secret from him.
''I should have told you this a long time ago. But I just thought it was over, so I didn't think I should bring it up. I love you Ethan and I don't want to lose you. But I know you deserve to know everything about me. About my past.'' I paused to try to steady my rapid heart beating. Ethan waited patiently. I wanted to chicken out. But it was too late, Ethan already knew something was up. I couldn't just leave it at this and make him wonder. ''Ethan before you met me I was married. Actually legally I am still married.''
''What do you mean Melanie?'' Ethan interrupts looking shocked. Of course he would be, that was understandable.
''It was an arranged marriage, Ethan I didn't love him, I didn't even know him!'' I defend myself, scared he already was going to be upset with me. And I still had to tell him even more.
''But still you are married and you haven't bothered to tell me?! When we are engaged?!'' Ethan raises his voice. I watch surprised as he starts to pace the living room running his hands through his hair. I've never seen him so tense, usually he's calm and practical. But I couldn't blame him, for something like this it wouldn't be normal if he didn't get upset.
''I'm sorry. I just wanted it behind me.'' I say, barely above a whisper.
''So why isn't he around?'' Ethan questions standing still to hear the answer.
''I faked my death and moved far away from him.'' I respond.
''What kind of person fakes their death?!'' Ethan demands. Feeling frustrated I jump out of my seat.
''I didn't know what else to do Ethan! He was a mobster, I was scared for my life!'' I burst. It's silent for a moment as Ethan gawked at me and I stand there regretted losing it.
''He is a mobster?'' Ethan finally says.
''Yeah.'' I simply reply. Ethan sighs and sits back down on the chair. I sit across from him on the couch. It's quiet, he doesn't say anything. He can't even look at me. The tension was unbearable and I felt like it was the moment right before everything fell apart. But I didn't want things to fall apart, I just got my life together. ''Ethan I'm sorry.'' I try to apologize.
''If your husband found out you were still alive, what do you think he would do?'' Ethan asks monotonously.
''I don't know. But I would pay, and my family too.'' I guess holding in a fearful shudder. After what felt like minutes I felt Ethan take my hands again. Slowly I look up to meet his gaze.
''I love you Melanie. And I don't want to lose you either. I'm not going to let anyone take you away from me. So I'm here to stay and protect you.'' Ethan says. A wave of relief, so strong I start to cry, comes over me.
''I'm sorry.'' I repeat myself.
''Don't be honey. I've already forgiven you. Let's just get through this together.'' Ethan hugs me and I hug back. Feeling a weight lifted off my shoulders.
