11th June 2000.
The small boy ran down the street as fast as he could. He coulden't miss her, he needed to see her one last time.
He sighed in relief when he saw the huge truck stationed outside her house.
A girl the same age jumped from the back of the van, shielding her eyes from the early morning sun.
"Zoe!" The little boy yelled.
The girl - Zoe, turned her head in his direction and she smiled.
"Hello Zach." She said with a smile when he reached her, her four missing teeth becoming very noticeable through her wide grin.
"Happy Birthday Zo." He started, returning her smile. "It's a shame your moving on your birthday, huh?"
Her smile faded and she nodded sadly. A glimmer caught her eye from behind Zach's back and he pulled out a rectangular parcel wrapped in glittery foil and a fluorescentpink envelope.
"I got these for you, hope you like it." He spoke as he handed them to her,
She blushed crimson and carefully pulled off the shiny paper to reveal a large, sixty-four pack of crayons.
"Thank you!" She exclaimed excitedly and pulled him into a bone crushing hug, well as close as a frail six year old can get.
It was his turn to blush and he gently traced the concrete with his shoe.
She then opened the fluorescent envelope and read through the writing on the card.
'To Zoe,
Happy birthday, hope you have a good one!
Sad to see your going, I'm going to really miss you.
Best friends forever.
Zach x'
She smiled and tucked the card back into the envelope.
"Thanks Zach." She giggled.
"Come on Zo, we wouldn't want to get caught in traffic!" Called Zoe's father from inside the van.
"Coming daddy!" She replied.
Her eyes brimmed with tears when she looked at her best friend, whom she'd be leaving in just a few moments.
She pulled out a crayon from the packet and placed it gently in his palm, closing it into a fist.
"Bye, Zach." She whispered, before climbing into the truck.
It wasn't only until the truck was out of sight that Zach looked at the crayon, Royal Blue. His favorite colour. He smiled sadly to himself, how nice.
11th June 2010.
Zoe groggily and got out of bed. June the eleventh, sixteen years old today.
She smiled happily to herself and walked downstairs to find her family sitting at the dining table together, she received a chorus of 'happy birthday' from them all before she was handed a pile of birthday cards.
She opened the first, from her family and a few from her high school friends before she came across a familiar fluorescent pink envelope. She smiled and opened it.
'To Zoe,
Remember me? The guy who was your best friend when you were six? You gave me a blue crayon that day, my favorite.'
The wrigting changed from black biro to blue crayon.
'I still have that crayon, The day of your sixth birthday I realised that I loved you,
As I promised, best friends forever.
Zach x'
She grinned, and ran back up to her room and rummaged under her bed and fished out a worn tin box.
She put in the card and the envelope.
The box now contains; Two birthday cards, two florescent pink envelopes.
And sixty three crayons.
