We arrive and the white, two story house. I smile, grab my bags, and jump out.
"Oh, I forgot to mention," papa says "we have a surprise for you." I look at him with a huge smile.
Then, I hear a bark. Last time I checked they didn't have a-

Oh my god the dog is for me! My eyes widen.

"Really?!" They nod anxiously. I drop my bags and take off into the house. I spot a small black cage wiggling and shaking. The dog inside barks and yips. It's pure black and only a foot tall and no longer either. I rush over and open the cage. It jumps on me and licks me all over. "Haha!" I push it away and check its gender. It's a he!
"Come on boy!"
I run to the door and let him out. He runs around and jumps on papa. I run around with him.

"What's his name?" I ask.
"That's your choice. It's your dog." Papa replies as he and nana take a seat on the white rocking chairs up on the porch. I sit in the grass and the dog jumps on me. He sits in my lap as I pet him. His dark brown eyes look into mine then he curls up in my lap. The wind rips through the air and I shiver.
As if nana could read my mind she says, "Lets go inside before y'all get sick."
I gather up the dog in my arms and stand. Papa holds the door for me as I walk through. I sit on the sofa with him in my arms.
"Hmm, how about we call him.... Jack!"
Jack looks up at me as if he already knew his name.
"I think it's perfect." Says nana.
"Sounds fit for a dog like him." Papa adds.
"What do you mean?" I question.
"Well jack could be short for jackass! He sure is one! He's torn up three towels in two days!" Papa laughs.

I smile and look down at jack. He wags his tail and licks me.
"What do you say we go get Jack some toys and a collar?" Nana asks.
"Sounds great! Can we go to Pet-smart, they allow pets inside." I plead.
"I reckon we can." She smiles. I rise and put my coats and boots on. I pick Jack up and get ready to leave when papa stops me and hands me $50. I look at him.
"Really?!"
He nods and smiles. I take the money and put it in my pocket. Mom and Bryan never give me money, so this is a rare sight. I stick jack in my coat so he will be warm. He pokes his head out beside mine and licks my cheek. I laugh and nana finally comes. We open the door only to be blasted with frigid air. The cold nips and bites at my cheeks and nose. Jack puts his head back in my coat. I run to the truck and nana does too. Jack jumps out of my coat when I close the door. Nana jumps in a second after I do and Jack jumps on her. I laugh and pull him off.

We pull into the parking lot and Jack sees another dog. The hair on his back stands up, and he growls but I shush him and put him back in my coat. We get out and rush into the store. One of the store managers welcomes us and offerers us a small rope to tie onto jacks collar. I take it and thank her, but we don't have a collar yet so I just carry him.
"I'm a bit tired drake. I'll wait here you go get what you need." She sits on the bench and I nod to her. I grab a cart and set Jack inside. I make a mental list of what all I need.
Collar
Leash
Food
Bowls
Toys
Name tag
I rack my brain for anything else and decide to keep moving. I go to the dog section and start on the food isle. I browse and find a 20 lbs bag of puppy chow. I start to leave but see some treats. I pick some up and show them to Jack. "What about these boy?" He wags his tail and takes the bag from me. I laugh and keep moving. I grab a metal food and water bowl. Nothing special. I find the collars. I browse and find a fluorescent orange collar that contrasts beautifully with his black fur. I make sure it fits and put it in the cart. I find a camouflage leash and put it in. Now to the toys. I put the collar on him and the leash. I let him choose a toy. After about 3 minutes of him searching he finds a rubber frisbee. I smile and put it in. I find a tag machine and pick out a plain copper tag. I put in the information.
Pet: Jack Gray
Address: 2340 Sadrave Road
Owner: Drake Gray
I watch the machine engrave the tag and take it out.
We walk to the checkout and lots of people comment on how beautiful Jack is. I thank them and continue to check out. The total was only $32.43 so I have plenty left over. I find nana in the same spot where I left her. She smiles and hands me a picture of Jack. I take it and smile. "Thanks nana! This is great! I have plenty of money left over, can we go to lunch? I'll pay." Technically it was papas money but I'll bring him something back.
"I don't see why not." She smiles and we head out to the truck. I let Jack walk on his rope leash the woman gave me.
A small white dog approaches us with its owner. I figure it's a great opportunity to let Jack meet another dog but Jack must think otherwise. He bares his teeth and growls. I pull him away and apologize to the owner. I scoop him up.
"What's wrong with you Jack?" He looks at me with his apologetic brown eyes.
"Hurry up drake!" Nana calls already to the truck. I jog with Jack in he cart and put him and the bags in the truck.
I jump in and hold Jack.
"Maybe Jack'll be a guard dog." I say jokingly rubbing his head.

We arrive home with a bag of food for papa and our bellies full. I get out and carry the bags inside. Jack trots beside me and follows us inside. I deposit the food to papa.
"Find everything?" He asks.
"Sure did. Oh and I have $10 left over." I hand it to him. He takes it and I take all the tags off of jacks things. I attach his collar and give him food and water. He inhales his food and drinks most of the water. I let him outside to use the bathroom. I stand inside at the door watching him.
"Papa can I take Jack home with me?" I question. I hadn't thought about till now.
"I don't think I can say. You'll have to ask your mom."
I sigh. I hope she lets me.
