To mine properly you need a tool like a pickaxe to make a pickaxe you need some ingredients like sticks wood planks and a crafting table to get sticks or to get wood planks you need a crafting table and to make all that stuff you need wood. Wood is not underground but above ground and wood comes from trees. Now to mine properly you never dig strait down.
