Light in the Sky

I stretch as I sit up in bed. Rubbing the sleep from my eyes, I get up and trudge over to my bulletin board, covered in sticky notes. All blank, sticky notes.

A small sigh escapes my lips.

Again, there was nothing worth remembering. I had told myself that at the end of each week I would write down something worth remembering on my bulletin board. Despite that, my board was always blank.

I turn away from my wall to fill out my morning routine of getting ready.

"Mom. I'm going out for a walk!" I exclaim from the front door. Even if she didn't hear me, she'd know where I was. I walked every morning, since my doctor claimed it would help my memory. I'm still waiting for the day they actually pay off.

Even though the memories that I loose are short term, it would still be great to at least be able to re call them.

I tie up my hair, before slipping my sweater on over my tank top. The clouds that seemed to never disappear were showing signs of dropping rain soon, so I didn't want to leave without it.

I start off at a light jog along the sidewalk that will eventually lead me to a local park. I carefully take in the details of every little thing I pass. You seem to have a different aspect on your surroundings if you know you're going to forget them.

When I finally reach the park, I slow down to a walk, taking deep breaths and inhaling the cold morning air.

"Rosey?"

I whip around when I hear a voice behind me. A man around my age starts to approach me with open arms.

Without a word, I back peddle away from this advancing stranger. "How do you know my name?" I say to him quietly.

He lets out a small laughing, and puts his arms down but doesn't stop walking toward me. "You couldn't have forgotten me that easily could you?"

Forgotten.

I bite my bottom lip and look down at the ground. Don't tell me I had talked to this person. I don't want to hurt anyone else.

"I-I..." I quickly turn around and start to speed walk away. I can't confront him. What would I even say?!

Suddenly I'm being dragged back and I let out a small scream when I see that this mystery man had grabbed onto my sleeve, pulling me to him.
"Rose...what's wrong?"

I look up into his eyes and my breath catches. The emotion hidden behind his eyes...it's authentic. Real. He truly wants to know what's wrong.

"Who are you...to me?"
That seems to catch him off guard.

He blinks a couple of times before chuckling and rubbing the back of his neck. "Wow I guess you really don't remember me. It's me, Aiden. Your...friend?"

I can't help but give a small smile. "You don't seem so sure, yourself."

"Well...can I be your friend then?"
My smile instantly disappears. Sure. Is what I wanted to say, but I can't say yes. If I did then only the worst would arise.

I take a step back. "I need to go." I quickly turn around a walk away, glad that this time he didn't try and stop me.

That was too close. I close the door to my room, leaning against it and slowly sliding down to the floor. I came back from my walk early to avoid the risk of running into anyone else I supposedly 'befriended'.

Letting out a tired sigh I stand up and walk over to my desk, grabbing my special notebook.

Instead of a Diary I keep a kind of journal, where I paste pictures of places I want to go. I left at least two pages blank after each photo because if I ever did go, i promised myself I'd write down in full detail what the experience was like.

I open up the journal, looking at the first picture.

A beautiful castle that looked straight out of a fairy tail. Purple lights illuminating the building.

An amusement park called Disneyland.

I flip a few more pages to get to the next image. A place filled with candy. I smile at the photo, just imagining how bright everything would be. And how sweet!

I decide I'm going to print out more photos to glue into my journal instead of focusing on just my old interests.

By the time I finished, my fingers were sore from cutting the photos, and my back ached. I do have to admit though, I was satisfied. Getting up and looking out my window, I see that it's already dark out. It is always times like these when I wonder what tomorrow has in store...
