When I arrive at school, I park in the closest spot to the doors to Hansen High. Somehow everyone knows this is my spot and it's always there, empty, waiting for me. That's certainly a plus side to being friends with everyone... Jumping out of my black Jeep Wrangler, I walk around to the back seat and grab my school bag.
"Hey Aviary!" I hear a yell from the front of my car.
"Hey Jake." I say with a smile.
I shut the door as he continues his walk to wherever he sits in the mornings.
A chorus of 'Hello's' come from the group sitting at the table near the car park.
"Hey guys!" I say with a wave and a smile.
Pressing the lock button on my keys, I throw my backpack over my shoulder and walk towards my locker to organise myself for the day.
A greeting comes from practically everyone as I wander through the main hall. Walking up to my locker I quickly turn the lock and open it, throwing my backpack in and grabbing my books for the first class.
"Hidey hey, Ave!" I hear Jenn's distinct voice yell from a few metres away.
"What's up, Lil' A?" Rebecca follows.
"Hola!" Griffin says as she throws her arm over my shoulder.
That's one con to being short, I'm always leant on.
"Hey guyyyyssss." I say as I give each of them a quick hug.
"Don't you just love Fridays? A double period of maths, a double period of human bio, then religion and then chemistry? Fun." Bec says before banging her head against my locker softly.
"Hey, the plus side is last period something always blows up with Mr Heller around." I say with a laugh.
"Well, you're not wrong!" Jenn says returning the laugh.
"Let's go!" Griffin says, beginning to walk to our table in what our school calls an orchard. It's just a lemon tree and some berry bushes.
I sigh and plop myself on the edge of the table and put my feet up on the bench.
"What's wrong?" Bec asks, seating herself next to my feet.
"Exams are going to hit me like a ton of bricks. I've studied so much but I still struggle to remember everything." I admit with a grim face.
"Aw, Ave! You'll be fine, I know it. You're one of the smartest people in all the classes!" Jenn says putting a reassuring hand on my forearm.
"We should stop talking about it. I'll just stress out even more!" I exclaim with a fake laugh.
"Okay, but if you want to talk, we're all here, Ave." Griffin reassures me, throwing her arm over my shoulders again and giving them a squeeze.
"I know, I know." I say with a real laugh as Griffin takes her fedora off her head and plops it on mine, before taking a seat next to Becca.
I smooth out my dress and pull a bit of lint off of my lacey kimono.
"Your outfit is on point today, Jenn." I say and nod at her big, wooly jumper and denim cut offs. You wouldn't think they'd go together but they really do.
"Why thank you, little miss dress and converse." She laughs and nods her own head at my feet.
"Oh, shush! I couldn't be bothered!" I reply laughing back.
"3...2...1." Griffin says as she looks at her watch and the bell rings directly as she begins to stand.
There was a collective groan from both our group and the other group that sits on the other side of the orchard.
"Another double of Mr Andrews for you losers! See you later!" Griffin says before blowing us a kiss and running to her psych class.
We all drag our feet to our maths class and wander in to the room half full of tired, lazy students and take our usual seats. Bec is against the wall, second row up, Jenn next to her in the double desk and me with my own double desk next to theirs.
I quickly grab my math book and open it up to where we left off, page 239.
"Page 239 everybody!" Mr Andrews yells as his foot crosses the threshold.
Two steps ahead of you, I think with a smile.
The class does as instructed and opens their textbooks and their notebooks, ready to take notes and do the activities.
"Questions 7-29 please, I have a splitting head ache so you can talk, but please talk softly." He says plopping in his desk and rubbing his temples.
I get straight to work and finish the first two questions in about thirty seconds before there's a crash from the front of the class.
I look up to see some poor person laying on the floor, their books across the floor.
Instinctively, I jump up and go help the poor kid.
"Are you okay?" I ask, reaching my arm out for him to grab.
He looks up and takes my hand allowing me to pull him up.
"Yeah, my ego is a bit bruised, but I'll be fine." He responded with a chuckle, dusting off his pants and shirt.
I lean down and pick up his books and hand them to him.
"Isn't it normally meant to me the other way around? The girl trips over and the guy helps her and they fall in love?" He joked with a quick thanks as he takes his books.
"So, who have we got?" Mr Andrews asks before swallowing a paracetamol and taking a chug of water.
"Aidan Alexander, I've just moved here." The new guy answers Mr Andrews with a perfect smile.
"Do you have the same timetable as the one next to you?" He questions and he really can't be bothered nor does he care.
"Give me a look." I say and take it from his hand.
I skim over it and he has every single class with me, even the electives.
"We have the exact same schedule, sir." I inform him.
"Be his buddy. The seat next to you is empty, he can sit there." He speaks nonchalantly.
This shall be good. A new friend!
