"Do I look ok?" I turn around to face my mom.
My mom fixes my hair and smiles. "Honey, you look fine." I sigh and grab my phone on my bedside table. I check the time and it's already 7:30.
"Dad, let's go, we're gonna be late!" I yell and grab my backpack and my lunch.
It's gonna be the first time in a year since I've seen my friends. You see, after 5th grade, I moved and since my mom can't drive, I had to find a school closer to home. So, I left in 6th grade. I've changed now ... a lot. I'm pretty sure it's not for the better either.
When we reach the school, I kiss my dad good bye and start to walk to the 7th grade line. I grabbed my phone and checked the time. 7:59. It's the first day of school and I'm already gonna be late. I put my phone back into my bag and run to the line.
"Hey Rayelle!" I smile as I see my best friend Linda run up to me. I give her a small wave and smile back. She looks at me like I'm crazy and slaps me. "Ow!' I yell. Geez I thought we were friends.
I look up at her shocked. "I haven't seen you in a year and all I get is a little itty bitty smile and wave? I thought you were my best friend!" I then understood. Oh Linda. I loved her like a sister. I was about to smile when I decided to give her a little taste of her own medicine however.
I looked up to her and frowned. "But ... My best friends are Alice and Jemma?' She looked like she was about to cry. My heart broke. She didn't let me finish!
"You however, are my sister." I said. Linda looked up at me and smiled. "Goddamn you Rayelle." "Love you too!" I winked at her.
"Come here you!" She gave me an authentic Linda hug. The ones where you feel safe and feel like you belong. I missed them.
"RAYELLLEE!" I looked up and got out of the hug to see my other best friends that I had missed so much come towards us. Alice, Jemma, Ebonie, Cecilia, Ruby, and Yasmin start to pick up the pace when I put up a hand in front of me. They all stop and look at me confused. I started to run in slow mo towards them when Ebonie understood what I was doing. She started to run to me in slow mo too and as we met in the middle, I gave her an overly dramatic hug and screamed, "EBONIE!" In return, she yelled, "RAYELLE!'
Everyone started laughing at us and crowded around Ebonie and I. "I missed you guys so much." I said. "Us too." replied Jemma. We smiled.
"Ahem" said a voice behind me. We realized that the whole school was staring at us. I looked at the gigantic clock in the hallway. 8:03. Woops. I guess we were so caught up with seeing each other that we didn't hear the bell ring.
"Girls, get in line." We all turned around to see our new 7th teacher Mrs. Voto looking very, very angry at us. We all giggled silently and went into line. As we got into the line, I caught a glimpse of the cutest boy ever. hmmm. I faced the front of the school and started to say the pledge of allegiance with a smile on the face. This is going to be an interesting year.
After the pledge of allegiance, the whole class went upstairs to our class.
"I can't believe we're in 7th grade!" exclaimed Cecilia. It hit me. We're 7th graders. Just one more year till we graduate. We've been waiting for that our whole lives. I walk into the class and look for my desk.
"Rayelle! Over here! You're sitting next to me!" screamed Linda. I looked over to her, as was the rest of the class. I blushed, shook my head and walked over to her. I love Linda but one day, she is going to be the death of me.
I unpack my things and sigh. Then the weirdest thing happened. Mrs. Voto clapped a little pattern her hands and the rest of the class finished the pattern while I looked like an idiot and just stood there. Linda giggled and whispered to me.
