"When do I get to meet Lorenzo?" I ask Luke. I was in his car, coming back from another trip to Cincinnati. He looks at me in disbelief, saying "You don't want to meet Lorenzo." Was Lorenzo really that bad? "He doesn't know you're coming with me on these trips, or that I'm giving you most of the money we make from it. The last thing he needs to know is that you exist." He confides, continuing "In addition to that, he's really pissed off. Those guys from the other company are making better business than him."
"How many companies are there in Yellow Springs?"
"Like four, I think, but there are only three important ones; There's Lorenzo's business, the guys that were chasing after us a month ago work for Jason's company, and then there's another company run by a girl named Claudia. She's a hot lesbian, but I convinced her to be straight for one night." He looks at me, a smirk on his face as he watches me turn fifty shades of red. "Oh sorry, little ms. virgin, does that sort of talk make you uncomfortable?"
"It's just the way you say it that does," I shift into a more upward position in my seat, continuing, "If you want me to help you with your attitude, you need to tone down the sexual innuendos."
"Aw, come on, babe. Those are what make me fun! No one wants a guy who just flat out talks about sex, I like to make things interesting."
"You're telling me." I retort. He looks at me smiling, happily. It was was strange... A few days after Luke and I made amends, he asked me if I could help him 'become a better person', as he said. I agreed, but still quite unsure about what he wanted. I lean back into my seat, looking out the window. Bam. The back of Luke's car gets hit. "What the fuck?" Luke glances up at one of his rear view mirrors. He slowly pulls his car off the road where he can take a look at the damage. I turn around in my seat, seeing the car behind us coming to a stop as well. This seemed sketchy. And to top it off, the other car had tinted windows. Luke unbuckles his seatbelt, starting to get out of his seat before I grab his arm and pull him back in abruptly. He looks at me, raising an eyebrow. "What the fuck are you doing?" He asks, pissed off.
"I don't think they hit your car on accident." I say, truthfully in a whisper.
"What are you trying to say?" He turns back around to look at the car.
"Their windows are tinted. They haven't left the car to apologize yet. This a repeat of the first night we met, do the math."
"Shit." He rolls his eyes. "Stay in the car." He commands. He pulls open a compartment of the car and pulls out a gun. "Holy shit." I murmur. He looks at me, grabbing onto my shoulder, saying "It'll be okay. Don't worry." He steps out of the car slowly, his gun still lodged in his hand. I see him walk towards the car, and two men walk out. They seemed to be in there mid 20's, both wearing tight white shirts and baggy jeans. Was that some sort of uniform? I laugh at the thought. My amusement is drained away when I hear deafening yelling coming from out of the car. I turn all the way around, but I'm not able to see what's going on, the back window of the car was too small. My heart started to race. No way Luke was safe with those guys, and no way was I safe, either. I wanted to know what was going going on. I began stepping into the backseat to get a clearer view from the back window, until an ear-piercing sound stopped me in my tracks. It was a gunshot.
I couldn't wait in the car anymore, I stepped back into the passenger seat, yanking the door open and running out. As soon as I got to the back of the car where they were, I instantly regretted it. All three of them were standing there, perfectly in tact. But one of the plain white T-shirt wearing guys did have a gun, aimed right at Luke. Fuck. "You fucking stupid bitch." Luke mumbled, shaking his head as soon as he saw me. "Who the hell is this?" The other guy says, taking a step closer to me. I back away slowly before he grabs onto my wrist. "Walk back any further and you'll get hit by a car. Wouldn't want to ruin that pretty face of yours." he chuckles, bringing me back to the perimeter of the scene. "Jack, Vince, meet Clover. Clover, meet Jack and Vince." Luke remarks, his tone still sardonic, even with a gun pointed at him. I'm assuming Jack's the one who's holding the gun that's aimed at Luke, and Vince was the other one. "Clover, huh? So you're named after a fucking plant?" Jack queries, laughing. I roll my eyes.
"We were just in the middle of something, Clover. Maybe you should go back in the car so you don't need to watch us shoot your boyfriend's brains out." Vince says.
"What, why are you going to do that?" I ask, my legs shaking in fear. A month ago, I had no problem with leaving Luke to fend for himself, but now I didn't want to. Mostly because I don't think I'd forgive myself if I let Luke die. He wasn't going to die, was he? They can't be serious about shooting him. Maybe it's just a threat. I can't imagine Luke dying. I can't imagine this happening.
"For one thing, he's a jack ass, And second, it's just business." Vince explains.
"Business my ass." Luke retorts, earning a punch from Vince. He falls to the floor.
"Stop it!" I scream. Vince takes a step closer to me, and I go into ultimate panic mode. "It's not his fault, if you have a problem then you should talk to Lorenzo about it. He just deals the stuff."
"Is this bitch serious?" Jack says looking to Vince, they both exchange a laugh. I look to Luke confusingly, and he just rolls his eyes, throwing his head back. "That is Lorenzo. We are dealing with Lorenzo." Vince says. Oh, Luke was still going by the name Lorenzo.
"No, that's Luke. Luke works for Lorenzo."
"Jesus fucking Christ!" Luke shouts.
"Oh really?" Vince queries, flashing his eyes between Luke and Jack.
"Yeah, it's true." Luke croaks, standing up from the ground.
"Alright then, if you say so." Jack smirks, backing away from Luke. "We'll be in touch." Vince chuckles, jumping back into the car, Jack joins him as they race off. Luke walks straight to the car, ignoring me completely. I roll my eyes, walking to my side and stepping into the car. "Well, now I can say I saved you twice." I force out a laugh, he looks at me with the most hateful gaze I've ever seen a person give. What did I do? "You don't fucking get it, do you?" he mumbles.
"Apparently I don't. Is something wrong?"
"The reason why I go by the name Lorenzo is so that nobody knows who the real Lorenzo is. Now that those guys know I'm not Lorenzo, they're gonna tell their boss, and they're going to go after the real Lorenzo. When Lorenzo finds out..." He doesn't even finish his sentence, he keeps shaking his head.
"They were going to shoot you, Luke! I couldn't let that happen to you." I look at him, but he avoids my gaze.
"Yeah, well I'm a dead man either way. I don't know what I'm gonna do."
"You can't just keep taking the fall for Lorenzo. You don't owe him anything."
"You're right, I don't. But try explaining that to him." I stay quiet. "Look, I don't want to talk about this anymore. I'll deal with this problem when it comes back around. I just need you to stick with me on this, okay? I don't want to be alone."
What he says makes me blush. I bite my lip, trying to contain my smile. He doesn't want to be alone? That's so cute. He was being honest with me, he wasn't hiding his true feelings behind the snarky asshole persona he usually has going on. "Okay." I answer him. He looks at me, a smirk crossing his face. That couldn't be good. Well, at least I got to witnessed his empathetic side for a few seconds. "So according to Jack and Vince, I'm your boyfriend, huh?"
"When did they say that?" I ask.
"When they said they were going to 'shoot my brains out'."
"According to them, I'm also named after a plant, no thanks to you." I laugh.
"The name Clover is hot, I thought it matched you."
"You think I'm hot?" I gasp, my jaw dropped open.
"No, wait, I didn't mean it like that- Oh, come on... Shut up." He stutters, slipping up on his sentence. He was even showing a hint of a blush on his cheeks, or maybe I'm making that up in my head.
"At a loss for words? That's another first." I laugh, and he playfully punches me in the shoulder. He starts his car back up, and we drive back to Yellow Springs.
