“Come on Skylar, you will be late! Dr Maelstrom asked me to tell you that your new master wants to meet you out front! You leave in 5!” Trish’s voice was very loud and shrill, she was panicking. I understood the feeling perfectly, I had been feeling that way for the whole night. I was still in my room, lingering, trying to commit every last speck to memory. I turned towards the door and sighed.

“I’m coming” I yelled. Wow, I hate this place and now I am struggling to leave it. I am pathetic. I took one last look at the space I had lived in for the last 19 years. I was so glad we had cleaned it up. It was hard work, but well worth it, I don’t want my last memory of this room to be of it covered in blood. Finally I couldn’t hold off leaving for any longer, I had to leave. Without a last glance at my room, I whirled, grabbed my case and ran out of the room, down the corridor, until I saw Trish. I was running to fast by that point, I was a blur. I was going to hit Trish!

I flung myself into the wall, denting it and hurting my shoulder, but at least I had stopped. I didn’t want to mow down the only person who had ever cared about me.

“Wow, you are fast!” Came Trish’s voice from above me. I jumped up and gave her a giant hug. I didn’t want to let go, but I had to leave.

“Come on, he is waiting for you with Dr Maelstrom at the entrance. I’ll show you.” She led me gently to the entrance of the facility. I had never been to the entrance before, I had never needed to, and it wasn’t like I was leaving or anything. Well I was that day.

I stepped outside, a small action, but one that fundamentally changed me. I was leaving! It was stupid that I had spent so much time saying goodbye to my room. I was going into the real world! Without further hesitation, I strode out towards the long dark limousine that was waiting for me. Dr Maelstrom took my bag and put it in the boot. I stopped, I couldn’t get into the car quite yet, I had to say goodbye. I ran to Trish and enveloped her in a hug, I felt like crying, but I didn’t want to ruin all the effort Trish had put into my makeup. I sniffed and stood strait.

“That’s my girl! Skylar, you go out there and show the world who you really are, its time.” Trish was crying, tears streaming down her face, I had known her two days, yet she was like the mother I never had.

“I’ll miss you.” I whispered and she nodded. I turned away and walked towards the car. That was the last time I ever spoke to Trish.

Dr Maelstrom intercepted me just before I got into the car. Great, he was the last person I wanted to talk to.

“Be good, remember your training. Maybe with all this money we got from your sale we can make more people like you!” he seemed genuinely excited, and I hated to burst his bubble but…

“No. Do not condemn anyone to this existence ever again. Put your money into finding a cure for cancer or helping the poor! I don’t want to hear from you again. I don’t want to see you again. Leave before I kill you. I am finally getting out of this hellhole! I do not want my last sight of it to be of you! Anything would be better than that!” I shouted at him, all the feelings finally coming to the surface, all the things I had wanted to say over the last 19 years but had been too scared to say for fear he would hurt me. His shock was apparent and he stared at me lost for words. I did not let him say anything else; I got in the car, slammed the door in his face and sat back with a huff. Who does he think he is?

I was so absorbed into my thoughts that I did not notice when the other door opened and closed and somebody new got in the car, I didn’t notice anything until we were moving, leaving the science facility behind.

“Hello Skylar” the voice shocked me out of my reverie, so this was my saviour. I turned around in my seat to get a better look at him. It was the man from the room, the one that bought me. He was tall, I could tell from the way that his legs were bunched up in the foot-well. I couldn’t tell how tall he was last time I saw him – I was mainly focused on the fact that his heartbeat was the same as mine at that point, a fact that I was all too aware of now. He smiled at me, and I realised I had not responded to his question.
