Chapter 6

“Mate?” I was dumbstruck. What the hell was a mate? His look of elation dimmed somewhat.

“You don’t know anything do you?” he looked shocked and a little disappointed.

“Of course! I know nothing about vampire society! I know what I am capable of but nothing more. I was ‘raised’ by despicable excuses for human beings; all they taught me was how to kill!” At this point I was very angry and frustrated. He was treating me as an equal – it was nice but I had no idea how to react to that. And his disappointment… that was almost too much to bear! I mentally shook myself. I had known this guy for all of 20 minutes and my entire knowledge of the world was turned upside down. I also felt strangely connected to him. I was so used to being alone that the thought of having someone permanently in my life let alone romantically scared the hell out of me.

Damon looked shocked at my outburst and I internally berated myself. I barely know the guy and already his presence had made me show every emotion I was capable of in quick succession. I was disgusted with myself no emotion for 19 years and he comes along and I act like a hormonal teenager!

“I am sorry about that Skylar; if I had found you earlier then I would have broken you out immediately! Please forgive me!” the sight of the beautiful man begging for my forgiveness was shocking. I was momentarily stumped for words.

“I’m sorry for my outburst Damon, I…” my voice broke and I looked out of the window. I did not know how to act around him. The countryside was flashing by and I idly wondered where we were going. The silence became more awkward by the second and I was very relieved when he broke it.

“I should probably explain about mates now.” Damon was not looking at me and I waited for him to continue, “Mates are a major thing for vampires. When you turn 18 you become able to detect your mate. Vampire mates are not like the kind you read about in books although they are similar. Most vampires never find their mates and it is a highly celebrated occasion when one does. The vampire kingdom is always ruled by a mated pair one of which belongs to the royal family. However in the event that all of the royal children die without finding a mate another pair from a noble family would rule.” This was very interesting but not exactly relevant although it was surprising to find mates were so rare. I guess that literature does not get everything right after all. I listened carefully as Damon continued.

“When someone finds their mate a connection is immediately established although neither party may be aware of it at the time. Enhanced control, strange mood swings and obsessive compulsive behaviour are all signs that you have found your mate. These feelings only show up when your mate is close to you physically, so you could not just bump into them on the street and still experience the feelings for a while afterwards. It is a physical connection which is mutually beneficial to both vampires involved. There is an emotional connection too but it is muted unless the two parties become romantically involved.” He broke off at this point and my face flamed. I stared resolutely out of the window refusing to meet his gaze.

“You can ignore your mate although I have never heard of it happening. Most vampires never find their mate and become romantically involved with another vampire or a human. You can turn humans but it is a very long and difficult process and most humans don’t make it. This makes it a very rare occurrence. Contrary to popular belief vampires do not live forever, a very long time yes, but not forever. There are myths that some vampires have lived forever but there is no guarantee that these myths are true. Mind you with the amount of vampires killed when the myth was discovered no living vampire knows the truth.”
