The next school day... "That's the girl that stood up to Jackie." Some girl whispered as I walked past. I could feel a lot of eyes on me. "Uh, yes. I stood up to Jackie. Can I help you all?" I ask, irritated. "Sorry, we're just surprised. No one ever stands up to Jackie. It's surprising that you were the first." A shy nerdy kid tells me. "Oh, okay. Well, bye." I mumble.
I had so much attention all through the day. When lunch I went to sit at my normal table with all of the other 'losers' but they said I'm popular now and I can't sit there. The jocks invited me to sit at their table so I did.
"You know, we always thought you were hot but Jackie made rules saying we can't invite losers to sit with us." One of the football players told me.
"Well since I'm sitting here... You could all possibly tell me your names, I never really cared before, being a 'loser' and all." I said to them. They looked confused for a second but then the quieter, mischievous looking basketball player spoke up.
"She has no idea who any of us are idiots." He says in a deep voice, giving me chills.
"Oh. I'm Mike, that's Joe, this is Keith, There's Tanner too, and the freaky guy is Aiden." Mike, the smiley blonde football player told me.
"Yeah, freaky enough to kill you for saying that." Tanner says to Mike. Aiden just rolls his emerald green eyes and puts his headphones back into his ears. Like usual, I don't eat, so I just sit there and watch the guys wolf down their food. I couldn't help but notice how attractive Aiden was, with his dark hair and gorgeous eyes. He must have tons of girls after him. That thought gave me a pang of jealousy, I won't say that again.
"You gonna eat that?" Keith asks me, staring at my pizza. I push my tray over to him without answering. Aiden stares at me for a second, as if he were trying to figure something out from my eyes. His eyes kind of widen as he looks away.
"I'll be right back guys." I mumble because I have the feeling Aiden has something to say to me.
"Yeah, me too." Aiden tells them. I walk out and try to get away from Aiden but he traps me between a few lockers and his body. He puts his arms on either side of me so that I can't get away.
"Are you seriously starving yourself?" He asks sternly.
"What's it to you?" I mutter, trying to look mad.
"I don't know why I care, but I do. My point is, you need to stop letting what people say get to you. You need to eat, or else you'll die." Aiden ordered, even though he choked on the last two words. I could feel my throat tighten, and my sight started to blur. Oh god, I can't cry, not now. Aiden's gaze softens.
"How bad were they?" He asks me. I let myself slide against the lockers so that I was sitting on the floor, and I put my head in my hands.
"You probably think I'm a baby, just like they do." I mumble.
"No, I don't." Aiden says and sits down next to me. I feel his hand on my back. He runs circles beneath my shoulders and around my spine.
"Why are you doing this? You don't even know me, and normally jocks are the bullies too." I say in a confused tone.
"I- I don't know. There's just something about you that I feel like I have to protect, and I don't even know why." He explains cooly. My heart is literally racing, in any given second, it could jump out of my chest. Best lunch day ever, no joke. His emerald eyes are piercing holes into the side of my face as I look down at my feet, trying to calm my heartbeat.
