There was a lot of noise coming from the bustling city around me. Everywhere I looked there was color and there were so many Borrowers! I knew that the Underground existed, but I never believed that it would be so huge! Lizzie explained to me that the Underground was filled with Borrowers from all over the UK; there were borrowers all the way from Southampton to Scotland. Then Lizzie told me that she was a "Scottie", explaining her accent.
The Underground was a bit dirty, but parts of it were slightly modernized compared to how my father explained it. The building were dusty autumn colors and squished close together. The door frames on most of the homes were made from popsicle sticks and had doors made from credit cards, but a few had normal doors that were probably borrowed from dollhouses. Most of the buildings had windows or just a nearly cut hole where a window should be with laundry handing from them. It gave off an old feel when you entered, but overall it was a pretty welcoming place.
While I scanned the Underground, Lizzie explained to me about the history, which I already knew about from Father. After a few minutes of walking and listening to Lizzie talk about her life here and what everything is like, my nose caught whiff of something. I had no clue what it was, but it smelled amazing! My stomach began to growl as the smell got closer."So yer hungry?" Lizzie chuckled as I nodded my head vigorously, "Come on, we're almost to me home anyway." She began to walk a little quicker as I followed closely behind her.
Lizzie finally stopped in front of a dusty yellow house that was three stories with windows and a normal door. It looked almost identical to the homes around it, except for the fact that there was a line of bright red paint over the door. I had seen this on one or two of the other homes that we passed, but thought nothing of it.
"'Ere he is! Home sweet home!" I gave Lizzie a funny look when she said "he", "I call him Albert. A home is like a person. It gives you comfort and love, so a name is just me showin' some appreciation." I thought about that and smiled at the interesting, but strange idea. Lizzie was a bit odd, but I liked her.
As Lizzie pushed open the front door to her home, the smell of bread practically whacked me in the face. I smiled at the aroma and then looked around at the home. To my right was a long wooden table with an empty bowl in the center of it and six chairs pushed in, circling the table.
I didn't get a very good look of my surroundings before Lizzie shouted, "MUUUUM! I'M HOME!" Within five seconds of her saying that, a slightly large woman came bustling from a door across the room. She had fiery red hair, just like Lizzie, and wore similar clothes. He had an extremely friendly face and smiled graciously at us.
"Well 'ello there dears!," she smiled before turning to me, "Now who might this young one be?" She smiled and clasped my hands in hers and leaning in with a smile, taking my appearance in.
I awkwardly smiled at the woman and introduced myself, "I'm-," "Serena, 'er name's Serena, mum. She got lost and me 'ere decided to help 'er!" Lizzie smiled proudly and I nodded with a less extensive smile.
"Serena? Well that's a lovely name, for a very lovely young lady!" She beamed at me, causing me to blush from the compliment.
"Thank you miss-," "Thimble! Poppy Thimble ,darling, but you can just call me Poppy." I smiled at her; she seemed really sweet.
"I'm Serena Clock." Lizzie and Poppy's eyes immediately widened when I said my last name.... guess they've heard of the Clock Family.
"Clock, as in Arrietty Clock and Spinner?" Lizzie took a step closer to me with her mouth agape.
"Ummm.... yeah. Those are my parents."
As soon as I awkwardly said those words, Lizzie and her mother's mouths stretched open about five inches.
"Ya could'a told me tha' before! Mum get dad!" Lizzie was shouting a bit from excitement and Poppy hurried upstairs after a quick, "Be back in a jiff!"
I stood there awkwardly for a couple seconds before I heard the sound of footsteps coming down the stairs. Poppy emerged alongside a man with fiery red hair, like herself.
"Serena, this is my husband Pit." I looked at the man and smiled as he stuck out his hand to shake my own.
"Hello there Serena! As my wife already said, I'm Pit. I used to be a friend of your mothers when she used to live here in the Underground." My eyes widened for a second.
"Really? You knew my mother?" Pit chuckled after my question.
"Oh, she was a tough cookie, she was. Always looking for adventures with your father... almost got herself killed a couple times too." My eyes widened at the thought of my mother on adventures. She would never do such a thing like that now.
"But let's not talk of nostalgia now. We have you get you home young lady." I smiled at Pit. The thought came to my mind about how I was going to get home. I had no clue where I lived based on the outside and it was really dangerous out in the Bean world.
"How am I going to get home?" Poppy thought for a second before a look of realization appeared on her face.
"We should ask the mayor! He knows all about every Borrower that's ever laid foot in the Underground and where they are and-" Poppy was interrupted by Lizzie, "Yeah yeah, the mayor knows everythin'. We know tha'. But nobody 'as seen 'im in weeks. He's too busy and all tha' impor'ant stuff." Poppy shook her head in agreement.
"It is true, he's a very busy man. I however, think we should give it a try. I'm sure he'd be more than happy to help you."
"Okay, if you think so," My tone came out more unconvinced than I wanted it to, "Let's go meet the mayor!"
