"Where are we?" Jo said as she rubbed her eyes and scraped dirt off her face.
"I don't know. But last I remember being beaten up by the Crabs. They sure hit me hard on my side." Michael said.
"Oh, drat! Those Crabs are gonna get it! Next time we have war with them, we need better equipment." Jo said in a defeated voice.
"It's not the equipment we need. It's skill. And looking at ours, we'll need a lot of training before our next fight. And lots of luck, too." Roy admitted. But Jo couldn't face that kind of fact. The Crabs and The War Soldiers had been rivals for so long, Jo couldn't except that they were the weaker side.
"No! We have enough skill! What we need is equipment we can't afford. And maybe a little bit of luck too, but the only reason we lost is because they had better equipment! We are tougher than the Crabs and we've always been. Just because we can't afford the same type of weapons as them doesn't mean we let them run all over us! We're winning next time and if we don't, this club is over!" Jo sounded really serious, and this automatically changed Roy's face.
"What?! You can't end the club." he said in total shock. "The War Soldiers had existed ever since out grandpa's were here. They were the ones to start it, and we can't be the ones to end it. Please Jo, rethink this strategy. I don't want the club the end. We can't end the memories."
"But we haven't won a single victory." She said stubbornly.
"Then I guess we can't lose the next one. Right guys?" Michael announced, who was always looking forward to fights.
Roy ignored him, more concerned about the gang parting up. "We've never defeated the Crabs. Right. But we've defeated other gangs. And we're at the top of the list. 2nd place. So we're gonna end the club cause we can't be first?"
Jo stayed quiet. Then she noticed something they didn't.
"Hey, guys." She said quietly.
"Yea." Roy answered.
"Where's Sam?"
"Oh, yea. I forget about her." Michael said.
Everyone grew silent again. Then they started to hear mumbling sounds from quite a distance. They all ran towards the noise and found body parts sticking out from the ground, moving. They could see the knee, hands and some hair, too. According to their surroundings, they were in a graveyard.
"Aaaah! The dead is alive!" Roy yelled. He backed out slowly in fear. Jo was quite surprised to see the body parts moving. But just for a moment. Then her face transformed in realization, as she helped the body out the ground. Even Michael cried when she drew near it.
"It's Sam." She said, letting go of everyone's pressure.
Sam came out of the ground like a zombie would, with all her clothes and body filled with dirt.
"What happened?" Michael asked.
"Where am I?" Sam said, not concerned about the others. "And thanks Jo. I was having a hard time breathing under there. The soil is pretty compact.
Jo's face turned into a look of frustration and a thirst for revenge, as fists formed which closed so tight, even Michael was beginning to get worried.
"Are you ok, Jo?" He said.
"We're in a grave yard." She said quietly. "It's not enough we got defeated by the Crabs, but they buried us alive in a graveyard!? We are so busting out of here, and getting the Crabs for their mistake. And they will dearly regret it!"
"Calm down Jo! We aren't prepared. We need training. Besides, the Crabs are 16-18 year olds, while we're only 9-10. For now, let's go home. Our parents must really be worried about us. Come on, now, it's the middle of the night. Let's get out of here." Michael said. But Jo wasn't moving, and her hands stayed in fists.
Then Sam said something no one had expected. Sometimes, they'd tease her by calling her "The GPS" because in one look, she could memorize a map. And she had looked in a lot of maps of where they lived. But this time, she wasn't gonna get teased.
"I've looked in a lot of maps of Huston."
"Yea," they all said in unison, not knowing where she was going with this.
"Well, in all the maps I've looked in, the nearest graveyard was 20 miles from our local park, where we battled the Crabs."
This was shocking for a gang of 10 year olds. They were far from home and it was the middle of the night.
"How could the Crabs come this far into a graveyard to burry us alive?" Michael asked.
"I don't know. But maybe they drove us here, and we were too beaten to even notice. Maybe."
"Then we sure were beaten. Badly." Sam mentioned.
"But you guys." Michael said in such a low voice, that they almost didn't hear him. He cleared his throat, then began, "We can be farther away from home than we realize. We can be in any graveyard, far farther than 20 miles. Remember Sam said the nearest graveyard was 20 miles."
Everyone grew quiet, and no one spoke until they heard the sound of thunder.
"Aaah!" the three of them jumped. They were too freaked out that they'd jump at the sudden sight of a fly. But all this time, they didn't notice that Jo stayed quiet, hands still in fists, looking down, not concerned about where she was or how she got there. All she was thinking was, "revenge. Revenge. Revenge," and finally, she yelled out, "revenge!" As thunder cracked and lighting slashed, and rain poured down, dousing and isolating the four from the light of the moon.
