They all ran towards the sight of the exit, and it was almost dawn. Some light had entered the graveyard, and that was how they saw the exit. Or at least they thought it was the exit.
As they drew nearer to the sight, they figured that the sight of the "exit" was only a curve the gate had made to the left. At this time, they really hoped they were at least near it.
"Great Halloween, guys." Michael announced as he sat down for a break.
"What? Halloween? Tonight was halloween?" Roy asked, confused.
"Yup. We spent the night in a graveyard! Great, huh?"
"When we could've been collecting candy? No way. I love candy, and I missed out on the night I get the most!" Sam cried.
"Neigh. I think tonight would make a great memory. On halloween night, four brave kids, go running into an interminably stretched graveyard, to..." Roy's voice was creepy and mysterious.
"Stop, Roy." Sam yelled. "We didn't 'go running' into the graveyard. We were trapped and buried alive here by those unfair Crabs!"
"Don't bring that up, Sam."
"Well, you can't stop me. Carbs! Crabs! Crabs! Crabs!" She sang, definitely irking Jo. Michael and Roy thought Jo was going to explode, but she stayed quiet.
After resting for about half an hour, Michael's stomach began to growl.
"Hahaha!" Roy laughed, but soon realized his stomach was growling as well.
"Hahaha!" Michael laughed back.
"Very funny, Michael."
"Hey! You wanna fight? Huh? Huh? Come on, you scared?"
"Hey! You think I'm scared? Well you're wrong!" He cried. And with that, they both jumped on each other, with the rage and determination to see who was stronger.
"Stop it, you two!" Jo yelled, trying to end the fight.
"Yea. We all know Michael's gonna win!" Sam came in.
"Sam, I'm trying to stop the fight!"
"Sorry." She humphed.
Roy stopped at the thought of an idea. He grabbed one of the sticks he had saved earlier, and started carving something on the ground.
"What're you doing?" Sam asked, concerned, while trying to get an idea of his drawings. Roy was usually the artist of the gang, but even after the rain, this soil seemed hard to carve on.
"I think this is clay soil." Jo said, feeling the ground.
"Oh, I get it." Sam said in realization to the drawing. "But you're missing something. Here." She said, taking another stick, and adding to Roy's unreadable drawing.
"And if we can sneak up from here, then..." She and Roy continued there conversation, without inviting or explaining it to Michael and Jo, who seemed to have no idea of their "masterpiece".
"Hey, Jo. Do you have any idea what this is about?"
"Nope. But it looks like a house with a roof on the bottom." Michael started giggling immaturely.
"Wait, Roy. First we should get out before this." She pointed to the unreadable drawing she and Roy had just finished.
"Oh, yea." He said while trying to think of a way.
"Aha! I got it." She drew another diagram, which only Roy had understood, from the rest.
"Oh! Yea, why didn't I think of this! And I think maybe this could also be an option." He drew another diagram.
"Yea, that definitely could! And this one too." This kept going on for about half an hour. Roy and Sam usually planned all their strategies for their battles during their gang meetings. They did the same thing as they did now, and at the end, they would come up with an ingenious strategy, which would eventually cause their victory.
"Oh, no! Roy, we did this part wrong. It's supposed be like this."
"Good catch. So then, this part would be like this, and not to the left, like this? Right?"
"Absolutely! So then we did this part wrong too. It would be like so." She fixed the drawing. This kept going on until Michael fell asleep. Jo noticed the sunrise, and started to rush everyone.
"Come on! Hurry! And what on earth have you two been doing the last hour?! It's sunrise, and we're still not out of this freakin graveyard! Let's go!" She shouted, while pulling Roy from the arm.
"Hey, Jo! Stop! Sam and I got this. We know a way to get out of this graveyard."
"We already know how to get out of this freakin yard! We follow this gate and get home!" She slammed the gate to her right, indicating it to Roy. He could hear the vibration go on for a while.
"We got a better way." He said in a low voice, while shrinking back from the loudness of Jo's voice.
"What better way!" She yelled again. Michael awoke, to see the commotion. He rubbed his eyes and got up.
"Not so loud, Jo. Calm down. Give Roy and Sam a chance, after working so hard for over an hour." Jo started to take deep, cleansing breaths and said in a low voice, "go on." Roy cleared his throat and motioned for Sam to begin.
"Alright. Listen. The way we're going now, we'll get out of this graveyard, at a time called never. We were so blind all this time. Usually, gates, or walls to graveyards are a square or rectangle.
"Yea, so?"
"We already made 4 turns. That means that we are going in circles!"
"No way!"
"Yes, way. The only way out is under."
"But even after the rain, the ground didn't soften."
"Well, I guess we still dig. If we wanna get out."
"Sure. We can dig. But isn't it weird that there is no exit to this graveyard?"
"Yea, but we don't care. We just wanna get out." said Michael
"And we figure out a way to dig under." Sam said in delight.
"Yea. We gotta kind of move a part of the gate. Push it back and forth." Roy's said, demonstrating. The rest of the gang began to help. This caused a little hole in the ground. They kept doing this until the hole was deep enough, that the leg of the gate couldn't reach the bottom to enlarge the hole.
"See." Roy said feeling in the hole. "The soil is much softer lower."
So the four of them started digging by hand, so they could get out. They kept this up until it seemed to be getting darker. There was no thunder clouds and it didn't look like a solar eclipse.
"What's wrong?" Jo Sam asked as Jo had stopped digging and started looking at the sky.
"It shouldn't be getting darker."
"That's weird." Roy said stopping as well.
"Com on, Roy. See if you cN squeeze through the hole." Michael urged Roy and pulled him on the arm. "We can't worry about this now."
He finally gave up. "Ok." He lay on the ground and started to crawl in through the hole. When he realized he couldn't fit, he reverted and lay on his back, in an attempt to try again. This time, his arms going in first, heto the hol beyond this gate."
"Yea." Jo said.
"There's nothing." Said Michael, confused.
"Exactly. Nothing. It's barren."
"So? It's weird, but I don't get it."
"What Sam means is that we can't get out like this. Even if we pass this gate," he was interrupted by Michael.
"But that's the problem! We can't find a way out! This gate goes on forever. And maybe I haven't mentioned it to you before, but this place had me creeped from the beginning!"
"We dig out. But even if we do,"
"That's it! Why didn't you say before? We dig out! Yes! We're free! At last! You guys are geniuses!" Michael shouted in joy.
"Even if we do," Roy tried to continue, but Michael and Jo had already started digging.
"Stop talking and help us, Roy."
"I guess they'll find out for themselves." Whispered Sam, as she started digging.
Once they were out, everyone was amazed. In a blink of an eye, the barren land had become the same graveyard.
"Creepy." Michael said in disappointment.
"You could've warned us." Jo said.
"We tried." Sam responded.
Confused, Michael asked, "But how did you guys guess this?"
"We are in this graveyard." Sam said.
"Yea? So?"
"No. We are in this graveyard, in our own graves." Roy responded.
"We're dead? Is that what you mean?" Michael asked. "I feel ok. Except for all these bruises we got from that battle with the Crabs." Roy and Sam gave him a look, telling him he found the answer to why and how they were dead.
"Wait, what! You don't mean it's.... Are you sure, maybe it's," he finally gave up and faced the fact. The Crabs had actually killed them. And once someone's dead, they can't come back to life. That is, until one day when they will. The Crabs had killed them. The Crabs had killed them. The Crabs had killed them. Silence. No one spoke, until Michael asked, "but when you were planning with Sam, you two didn't sound like you knew you were dead."
"That's because we hadn't figured that out yet. We were planning a way to get out, and we have. We said that if we dig out, it's only barren land. But then we thought there might have been an end to that barren land. We also thought that we needed to go back. Way back, cause we saw something else but barren land. But we weren't paying attention outside the gate, so we wanted to take a look. Those were the options we were talking about."
"But you were also talking about other things like 'sneaking up' on someone. Or something like that." Michael said.
"Yea, but that time we were planning on how we can get vengeance at the Crabs." Roy said in a low voice, frowning. "And it's too late for that."
"But how do you know we are dead? Maybe we are seeing things. It's still pretty dark."
"It shouldn't be. It was dawn about 20 minutes ago." Jo doubted.
"But it seems to be getting darker" Michael observed.
"It'll only get darker from now and on. Except it'll be like dawn when it's day time. It's getting darker because nighttime is approaching." Roy said.
"We only figured this out the last minute. After we told you guys we knew the way out. We thought we could dig out. But while we were digging, we figured that we were dead.
