It had been only a couple of days since the trigger from the military gun was pulled back and a bullet came flying out, causing Janie to get hit and fall onto the dead grass of the football field. The night following last, The military men had started building some kind of a wall. The only way the people in the town could see past them was when they got on the roof of The radio station. No one could figure out what they were building a wall for. It was night now and Jc, Janie's best friend, was the only person on top of the radio tower. Jc was leaning against the tower. She was watching the military men build their wall. As she watched, a memory from when Janie and her were kids sparked. She watched the memory behind her eyes as if she were watching an old movie in the movie theatre.
The girl was running around the tree that lay in the front yard. The girl was watching the friend climb the tree. " You're going to get hurt up there! Mama said we weren't allowed to climb the tree," the girl was yelling as the friend climbed higher, " You're going to get us both in trouble! come back down here!"
The friend stopped for a minute, sits on a branch, and looks back down at the girl. " Come on Janie! Your mom isn't going to know if you don't tell her. Relax, i've done this before," The friend looks back up at the top of the tree before continuing, " Plus, i'm almost to the top. come up with me. this tree's the highest in the town. we'll be famous."
The girl looks at the friend as she starts climbing again. " okay, i'll come," The girl says before she grabs a branch.
The girl is about halfway up the tree when the friend reaches the top. As the girl reaches for another branch, her foot slips, causing her to miss the branch and fall. The friend looks down at the girl from the top. When she sees the girl laying on the ground, she quickly climbs down. The girl begins to cry and her mother pulls up into the driveway. When she jumps out of the car, the mother looks at the friend.
When Jc starts to doze off, everyone hears a sharp, piercing scream come from the place where the military men had been building a wall. AT that instance Jc was jolted awake, looking frantically in the direction of the scream. Then she say it. The cause of the disappearance of the military men. The reason for the break out.
