Emily's Point of View

Friday. The fifth and most appreciated day of all. Except getting homework for over the weekend, fridays are for relaxing and chilling only.

But that's not how school works.

"This ain't kindergarten anymore, child! You pick up your head and start doing some work or you can go find yourself another school".

Yes, the same story everytime we complain about these things. Some students actually have to sit through an entire hour with people like these, maybe even a whole day if you count the others in too. Students who have to look them in the eyes without fear.

Teachers.

Horrible people who hate fridays or weekends or children. And yes, I am one of those students that gets to spend my precious time with them. Tragic, I know.

Because not only am I getting homework for sure, but because it's my birthday today. And like every other birthday, my parents are too busy working for our family business, to even look me in the eyes. No presents and maybe, once in 3 years or so, a kiss on the forehead.

But my birthdays aren't always a total bust.

"And there she is, people! The birthday girl".

"Go wild everybody!".

I look up from my laptop screen and start looking around to see who it was. But I was sure I already knew who. "What do you guys want?", I asked whenever I spotted Bailey and Lauren above me. "I actually need some alone time".

That, ladies and gentlemen, are my best friends. These are the two reasons that 'aren't always' is put in the sentence. I already knew Lauren in 4th grade. Her parents just moved into town and she moved into a seat next to me in class. Then we both met Bailey in highschool. We helped her a little with school when she used to have one of those, you know, emotional breakdowns.

Besides being school buddies, we love to sing along to some favorite songs that play on the radio these days. It's a special tradition.

"Nobody wants to sit alone in the cafetaria all day and wait for the bell to ring to go to class again", Bailey and Lauren took a seat each beside me.

"Did you already get a birthday wish today?", Lauren asked me while putting her bag down on the ground.

"Not really", I said.

"Yes! Another year we are the first ones to wish you a happy birthday! 16 times a row, I'll tell you; we are going to break a new record", Bailey laughed. She took out a piece of paper with 'first bday wishes' written above it and added another line to the unfinished tally.

"19th birthday too", she said while adding it on the paper.

"Wauw! You guys are actually doing this, aren't you?", I asked.

"'Course we do, but only because we love you, honey".

"Tell me; did you already get a birthday present?", Lauren asked me.

I sighed loudly, because I knew what was about to come next: "No".

"Another. Achievement. For. The. Day. We should totally be in the World Records Book", Bailey exitedly said.

"Here, babe", Lauren took out a little package from her bag: "for you".

I grasped the blue wrapping paper in my hands and ripped it off, until I saw a tiny box with a tinier cupcake inside. It already had a candle on top of it.

Bailey turned on the candle quickly.

"And the best part is; you can eat it all by yourself", Lauren finished. "Make a wish!".

I looked at the cupcake with the burning candle on it and closed my eyes. It was awfully quiet for a moment and then I blew out the candle. Hoping it would come true this time, like how I hoped every birthday.

"Perfect! Now! Next thing we need to dis-".

Bailey's sentence got cut off by the school bell ringing loudly through the entire school building.

"We have chemistry now, so I'll make it quick", she picked up her bag and sunk her teeth in my tiny cupcake: "This evening. No party. Just us", she said.

"And SHOTS!", Lauren finished. And with that they both left me and my half eaten cupcake behind.

"Eat it all by myself, my ass", I said before stuffing everything back in my bag to get to History class.

Only to be facing another day of pain and rejection.

"Yay", I sarcastically cheered.
