The wind whistled shrilly. Time was running out. His army is almost assembled. If we don't get them to disband, our efforts will be for nothing. Footsteps echoed off the empty tunnels as my pursuers raced faster. I knew if they caught up with me, they would drag me back to their leader. I use to be apart of the clan that now hunted me.

Their king wanted me as his personal play toy and queen. Up ahead a light shown and bobbed as my only ally raced to get me to safety.

"Hurry! We need to get you out of here before you become either a play toy to the king or vampire chow to some of his lesser subjects,"his husky voice said as he grasped my hand and pulled me to a tunnel that would lead me to humanity.

As we burst through the door that lead us out of the tunnel, his face was clearly visible. His red eyes studied me, looking for injuries. As we walked, his black hair swung gently as it hung in his face. While he watched me, he chewed thoughtfully on his black lip ring.

"Are you okay,"he asked gently.

"Yeah. I'm fine,"I whispered as we entered a large crowd. Without thinking, I squeezed his hand harder as my anthrophobia tried to take over.

"You're safe now. Don't worry,"he whispered, squeezing my hand in return. I gave him a weak smile as we pushed through the crowd.

Eventually, we found our way out on to the street. We hurried past towering buildings to the woods. As we plunged into woods, I glanced at Lucas to see him still chewing on his lip ring and staring at me with his beautiful blood red eyes.

"What,"I asked timidly. I was afraid something might be wrong. He was risking a lot by not paying attention to his surroundings.

"Are you sure you're okay? If you're not, we need to fix that,"he whispered, coming to a stop. I lowered my head quickly to hide my surprise.

He grabbed my chin and raised my face so he was looking into my soft brown eyes. He continued to chew on his lip ring as he studied my face. He leaned closer until the tip of his nose was touching mine and his breath tickled my lips.

"I can't let the vampire king get you,"he whispered, moving his lips to my ear.

"If I lost you, I might not be able to live and my people need me,"he continued, his hands holding my shoulders. My hands rested on his chest. I could feel his heartbeat beneath the muscles on his chest.

"What do you mean,"I asked, my heart racing. He leaned closer so his lips were touching my earlobe.

"I can't lose you. You're too important to me. You are so fragile. The vampire king will destroy your innocence and I'm no better,"he breathed.

He gently grabbed my earlobe with his teeth and pulled. His arms snaked around my waist and pulled me closer to him. He let go of my earlobe and pressed his forehead against mine.

"You're too gentle for the vampire king, but you're too good for me. I...I can't control myself. I can't walk away from you. You would be so much safer without me. I'm a monster,"he whispered, pulling his face away from mine.

He hung his head and pure sorrow filled his red irises before his black hair concealed his face. I grabbed his face in my hands and lifted it up. He was trying to protect me by pushing me away.

He thought he was a monster. The guy who told me the truth about the world I lived in, who showed me only kindness and concern. He gave me a sense of security that I never had.

"You are not a monster, "I said with a shake of my head, lifting his face up and locking my eyes with his.

"You have only showed me kindness. You only want to protect me. I feel safer with you than with anyone else. I don't want you to push me away, "I said.

His eyes widened with surprise. He searched for my eyes, looking for proof that I was lying. I was not.

He leaned down and pressed our lips together. He tasted of the sea. He smelled cistrusy. He pulled me closer and kissed me again and again.

"Lucas,"I whispered. We need to get moving and he understood that. As he pulled away, I grasped the tag that hung from his black collar that hugged his neck.

It has his name etched onto it. He wrapped his hand around mine, causing me to look up. I noticed that his black wolf ears were twitching and his eyes studied the trees surrounding us.

He pulled my hand away from his neck, spun on his heel, and gently pulled me into a run.
