3. This is who I really am

I woke up to bright sunlight streaming in the room and looked around, confused. I had no idea where I was but then figured it must be Lucas’ house. I shook my head to clear it. I couldn’t remember how I got into that bed or here at all. The only thing I dimly remembered was getting off the plane. I also noticed I was still fully dressed. So I must have fallen asleep. I yawned and got out of bed.

My backpack was standing next to the bed and there was a note on top.

                Good Morning Alexis,

I didn’t want to wake you, since you were obviously very tired last night. If you’re up you may come down for something to eat.

-          Kathie

I smiled at the note. Kathie was the name of Lucas’ wife, that much I knew. I sat down again and for the first time looked around the room. It was painted in calming blue colors, the curtains were a deep sea blue, matching the bed covers. The furniture was some light wood. It looked very elegant, somehow. Whoever decorated this room knew his job quite well.

I waited another few minutes, feeling like I was in a fairytale and could wake up every moment. But I didn’t want this to end. I didn’t want to be back on the cold streets, begging for every penny, sitting on the streets drawing no matter how cold or uncomfortable it was.

Finally I left the room and carefully went downstairs. I stopped in a light living room. “Good morning, you must be Alexis. I am Kathie.” She said smiling. I grinned back. “Yeah… erm… good morning.” So this was Lucas’ wife. She was beautiful. Slim and tall, dark brown hair that was slightly curly and blue eyes. “Did you sleep well?” she asked. I nodded. “Yes… I only don’t remember how I got here.” I said. Kathie smiled and I instantly felt at ease with her. “Lucas brought you to bed. You were asleep when you got here. He didn’t want to wake you.” I nodded, blushing a little. “Come on, I bet you are hungry.” My stomach growled just in that moment, confirming Kathie’s statement and making her laugh.

“Alright, what do you want to eat?” she asked. I shrugged. “I don’t know...” “Well, how about some toast with jam and some cereals, or scrambled eggs?” I grinned. “yes, cereals and toast with jam sounds fine. Thank you.” I said. “Please, sit. I get you breakfast.” Kathie told me and I shyly sat down.

While I ate Kathie told me that Lucas was away. He had an appointment. The kids were at school. “Well, it’s only us two home until the afternoon, when Lucas and the girls get back. Well, don’t be ashamed, but I saw you didn’t have any luggage except a backpack and, I thought maybe we could go into the city and get you some clothes.” Kathie suggested. I blushed. “I… don’t have any money.” I said. Kathie shook her head. “No, you don’t have to pay. I will. Please don’t worry about that.” I nodded. “That’s very generous, but…” Kathie interrupted me gently. “You can accept it, it is fine.” “Okay, thank you.” I said with a smile. Kathie nodded. “So, why don’t you finish your breakfast now and then you can take a shower? I can maybe lend you some clothes and then we drive to the mall, alright?” Kathie said smiling at me. I smiled back. I liked Kathie. She made me feel at home within minutes. And it was a long time since I had ever felt that way somewhere.

After I finished my breakfast Kathie gave me a quick tour of the house, stopping inside her and Lucas’ bedroom where Kathie lend me a pair of jeans and a simple blue t-shirt.

“Okay, take your time getting ready. I am downstairs when you’re finished.” Kathie said smiling softly. I nodded. “Thank you, Kathie.” I said and went into the bathroom.
