I woke up to find SS men peering down at me. The unpleasant smell of everyone in the small shed I was squashed up in greeted me and I looked around, confused. Suddenly my stomach turned a somersault and I was left petrified for a while. It only took me a moment to realise where everyone was being carried- the concentration camps. My body trembled;though it was hardly capable of doing anything. Death was only a few hours away- waiting...
We were all pushed into cramped, airless trains and there was no space to even sit down. Heat was rapidly building up and I knew that chances of me diying here were huge. There was a slight push and the train started moving. I was lucky to be next to a wall- it was something for me to lean on.
I closed my eyes, listening out for the distant sound of bombs erupting in the distance- it was a common sound. How much longer could this journey possibly last? Surely longer than I could sleep...
I only woke up by someone prodding me by the shoulder. My eyes fluttered open and I saw another SS guard, who steered me towards the others. I saw a small flicker of concern in his eyes and misery was painted all over his face;he was clearly not happy with working for Adolf Hitler.
Everyone else was standing there, shivering in the cold January chill, awaiting selection. We knew that with a swift swish of Josef Mengele's hand our fate would be determined. When he came to me I shivered and anxiety bubbled up inside me.
Staring at me, he pondered for a while. With a graceful nod he led me to a bunch of living skeletons, shivering like an egg waiting to hatch. We were told that our clothes will be disifected and that we will be taken to the showers- but something told me that was a lie.
We were shoved in a huge 'shower room' and when it was as airless as the trains some small children were finally thrown in- it was a horrible sight. Then something worse met my eyes. A small infant's skull was smashed against the wall as an unknown man threw him against it.
I imagined the poor child's pain as something was released into the room- and it wasn't water. A strong almond smell filled the room and I wrinkled my face up. Eew. Covering my nose and skewering in a corner, I tried to survive. But then the odour went through my fingers and into my nose.
I went back into the centre of the chamber and watched in horror as I heard some popping sounds and then watched some of my friends diying- falling to the floor. I felt my lungs swelling up and started crying. I was only 13.
More and more people died and eventually blackness also closed around me as I heard a popping sound coming from inside. I felt a short stab of pain and I knew this was the end... I, too, fell on the floor amongst others...
