She watched,
Helpless.
One of her best friends,
He was always so happy.
Never letting anyone get him down.
He had a free soul and wasn't afraid to be himself.
He was the weirdo with the free spirit that she wished she had.
She loved him.
As a best friend of course.
She loved him.
But she wasn't able to show him.
She had only ever hinted at it.
But he was oblivious to her true feelings.
He choose someone else.
To this day she doesn't know if she'd ever get her chance.
She gave up on him in that way.
Thinking of him as only a best friend.
But with the other girl he came close,
He was at the edge of pure happiness.
He was never seen without a smile on his face.
He was slipping from her grasp.
She didn't want appear clingy so she distanced herself.
But he didn't seem to notice.
He was too in love with someone else. He was changing.
He was no longer as free.
He was overjoyed but rarely himself.
He always put the other girl's happiness in from of everyone else's.
Including his own.
He wanted to make her so happy.
Trying to do so he lost a part of himself.
He became a little more self-conscious and shy.
Two things that would've never been used to describe him before she came along.
He loved this girl more than she loved him.
This may have had something to do with it but the reason is still unknown.
The other girl let him go.
She dumped him.
Over text to be specific.
Why?
She doesn't know.
But she was always there for him when the other girl changed him.
She was always there when the other girl tore his heart to shreds.
She watched as he put up a mask so that no one could see his pain.
But she knew him too well.
She saw through his mask and smile.
It was all fake.
He was no longer happy.
He didn't blame the other girl.
He blamed himself for changing for her.
He blamed himself for becoming a little bit more shy.
He blamed himself for his pain.
No one but himself.
She was there though.
She was by his side whenever she could be whether he liked it or not.
But he never really opened up to her.
He kept his mask on for months.
Soon a new year started and he was a whole other person.
He was taller if that's even possible.
He looked and acted a bit more mature.
But his personality changed too.
His mask was off.
He was turning back into the person he was before.
He was becoming more carefree.
He was smiling true genuine smiles that showed off his small dimples.
He was showing more passion every time he talks.
He's starting to get a gleam in his eye every time he talks about something or to someone he loves.
He's no longer so sad.
He's starting to talk more also.
He's acting more him.
He's turning back into his normal, weirdo, abnormal, hilarious self.
More like the him he was before that girl.
He's making more of his ridiculous faces when he finds something funny.
He's bursting out into laugher just like old times.
His laugh rings through the air with so much joy that he looks like he's seeing heaven.
He's him.
