Epilogue
Nicole's POV
“Push! Come on you can do it!” I cried; sweat dripping off my forehead as I urged her on.
Sophie screamed so fiercely that I was almost afraid for my existence if I continued to stand near her. Already I had lost feeling in the hand she was clutching onto so tightly.
“If you think…that you’re going anywhere near me after this Justin Martin Smith…!” Sophie started to shout at her husband before another scream ruptured out of her as she continued to push.
My brother was currently huddled into a corner of the hospital room we were in, where he was watching his wife give birth with wide eyes, his pale face the same shade of green of the scrubs we all had to wear to be in the room. Even though we all knew he wouldn’t be able to handle being at the birth (he gets nauseous when someone even pricks their finger) he had insisted and, true to his nature, as soon as Sophie began to give birth to their child he had fainted.
“This is so cool,” Isaac chuckled from where he was recording everything on his video camera and I shook my head at my husband’s antics.
“Ow!” I cried when Sophie suddenly dug her nails into my palms.
“Stop looking at them and help me!” She screamed and I immediately went into the breathing exercises with her.
“Hee hee, hoo. Hee hee hoo,” I continued and she did it with me as I swiped the wet sponge I was holding in my free uninjured hand, across her clammy forehead.
Honestly if Justin hadn’t been an idiot and had gotten her to the hospital earlier she would have had pain killers and my hand wouldn’t be injured.
“That’s it, I can see the head!” The midwife urged somewhere between the pandemonium that was going on in between Sophie’s legs. “Keep going. Just one more last big push.”
I dropped the sponge, clasped my hand around hers and mine, and shouted words of encouragement at her, screaming with her as she pushed with all her strength before finally collapsing back onto the pillows that propped her up, just as we heard the cries of the baby.
“Congratulations.” The midwife peered up at us as the nurses took the baby to get it cleaned up. “It’s a girl.”
Sophie and I grinned at each other, sobbing with tears of joy and relief in both of our eyes as we hugged each other. Isaac gave his cousin an absent minded thumbs up as he now focused on the baby that we were yet to see, his eyes wide in awe at his and my niece.
At the mention of him having a daughter, Justin finally snapped out of it and stumbled forward, his mouth open in a silent gasp of awe as he stood beside the nurses.
“Here, she’s all clean.” I heard one of the nurses say before she gave the baby to her father, who quickly gathered my towel covered niece in his arms.
Isaac stood beside him and cooed at the child, still not stopping recording everything.
“Hey come on, don’t hog. I think the mother deserves to see her more than you,” I laughed and Justin and Isaac looked up at me with joy in their eyes when Sophie suddenly clenched my hand tightly again.
“What’s wrong?” I asked the midwife in worry when Sophie started screaming again. “Is it the after-birth?”
“Oh no, not yet. It’s the twin.” She said absentmindedly and Sophie and I looked at each other in panic.
“Twin? You’re joking right?” Justin asked, and surprisingly he hadn’t managed to drop the little bundle of joy, that apparently was about to have a brother or sister coming into the world with her, in his shock.
