The First Scan

Thud-thud. Thud-thud.

“Oh my God.” I sighed, tears running down my face as I looked toward the monitor, trying to see the tiny thing that beheld the most beautiful sound that would ever fill my ears again.

“It’s…amazing,” Isaac breathed and I managed to tear myself away from the scan to look up at him, my tears increasing at the love and awe on his face as he too looked mesmerised at the screen.

“That right there,” The doctor said, pointing to a tiny little thing on the black and white moving screen, “Is your baby.”

I squinted, trying to get a better look at it, not completely understanding how such a tiny thing could have such a strong heartbeat, but at that moment I didn’t care.

My worries, my nerves…every qualm I’d ever had drained away just at that beautiful sound.

Thud-thud. Thud-thud.

Everything I’d ever deemed important, everything I’d ever hated seemed petty in comparison to the love and emotions I had just listening to my baby, to Isaac’s baby…to our baby’s beating heart that let me know it was safe and well. And warmth only filled me further at that thought.

It was safe and well inside of me. Inside of me.

I held life inside of me.

Thud-Thud. Thud-Thud.

I put mine and Isaac’s hand (that was intertwined together throughout this whole process) on the side of the tiny bump in my stomach that wasn’t covered in gel, smiling when Isaac’s warmth only increased the love I was bearing.

“Everything looks fine Mr and Mrs Tristan,” The doctor said and I looked up at him with a smile. “The baby is healthy and is coming along right on schedule. I will go now and print the images off for you and book your next appointment.”

“Thank you Doctor,” Isaac also smiled at him, my smile however faded when the doctor took away the weird wand thing and therefore stopped the beautiful sound of our baby.

But Isaac was already helping me sit up and gently rubbing off the gel with the tissues the doctor handed him before he left the room.

“I can do that you know,” I whispered, brushing my nose down the length of his cheekbone because he was standing that close to me.

“I know, but you’re already carrying the most precious thing in the world, so it’s only fair I help as much as I can,” He smiled, quickly stepping away from me so he could toss the tissues into the garbage before he was in front of me again.

Neither of us had bothered to tug down my jumper, so when both of us laid our hands on my stomach we were touching bare skin, like somehow in doing so we could connect with the child that was not yet ready to see us and the world.

“I think I was living in some sort of dream world before,” Isaac whispered as he looked at me whilst continuing to caress the tiny bump, his soft sky-blue eyes glistening with nothing but love and awe. “And even though it’s still like a dream…everything is somehow more real now that I know our baby is real. Does that even make sense?”

“No, but I get what you mean,” I laughed and kissed his cheek. “Your whole world view has shifted, just like mine, and everything just seems so…insignificant now because the only true thing is our child.”

“You took the words right out of my mouth,” He grinned before he kissed me firmly on the lips. “Thank you for agreeing all those months ago to be with me.”

“Thank you for forcing me to agree to be with you all those months ago.”
