Teresa’s P.O.V.
“You mean to tell me, that after all this time, he’s already another step ahead of us?” I demanded of Van Pelt, slamming my hand down on my desk.
Van Pelt continued to sit silently neither confirming what I had just said nor denying it and that made me that much more angry. I turned my back to her as I pinched the bridge of my nose. Control, Teresa. Regain Control, you need it. I ran a hand through my dark hair before turning back to Van Pelt.
“Go back into the bullpen, Grace, we’ll revisit this conversation after everyone has gone home.” I murmured, motioning towards the door.
“Yes, boss.”
I waited patiently for her to gather her things and walk out the door before calmly shutting my office door and closing the blinds. Once I was sure that no one else would witness what was about to happen, I sunk down onto the floor and, for the first time in a very long time, I cried out of pure frustration. I was so sick of Red John always being one step ahead of everything we did, of being afraid of a man I had never met in my life. That was the reality I lived with every day. I was terrified for myself and everyone on my team, I was terrified for the people who could be Red John’s next victim but, most of all, I was terrified for Jane.
He had spent the better part of ten years trying to hunt down the man who had turned his world upside down, the very same man who had killed Jane’s wife and child to teach him a lesson. Jane poured everything he had into trying to find Red John, as had my team and I, but to no avail. We had nothing to show for the ten years we had been trying to hunt Red John down except for a couple of names and even then Red John was ahead of us. We could never gain leeway with him, never be closer to the goal, because Red John always knew what strings to pull to make sure we were forever caught up in the game he loves to play and plan.
The resounding of soft knocks on my office door broke me out of my thoughts and I hastily wiped away the tears that a moment ago I had let fall freely down my cheeks. “Yes?”
“Lisbon.” His soft voice only whispered my name but I knew right then that he knew everything I had just learned myself.
I took a deep, shaky, breath before standing and dusting myself off. Then finally, I opened the door. I motioned him through without looking up. “Come in.”
Jane hesitated a moment before slowly taking me up on my offer, I closed the door behind him and walked straight to the chair behind my desk. Once seated I finally looked at him, I hadn’t seen him since I had kicked him out of my office the week before and, frankly, he looked like hell but there was something in the way his eyes looked that threw me off. There was a deep emotion there that I didn’t quite understand. Something, I had rarely ever seen. Regret.
“What can I do for you, Jane?” I asked, my voice coming out a little softer than I intended.
He continued to stare at me for what felt like hours but could of really only been seconds. “They were all a dead end.”
I nodded. “So far.”
He took a deep breath and in that moment he looked like the broken man underneath the front he put up for the rest of the world. “I knew they would be.”
For a moment, I felt my temper flare again but then I reminded myself that Jane knew Red John better than anyone else. He had spent all of his free time trying to get into the serial killer’s mind, He had an advantage that the rest of us didn’t. For a few minutes, neither of us said anything we just stared at the other. Until finally I couldn’t take it anymore and had to look away.
“What can I do for you, Jane?” I repeated as I began shuffling papers around on my desk.
Before he could answer, however, there my telephone began to ring. I picked it up. “Lisbon.”
“Lisbon, Murder downtown, 1226 Conway Drive. Your team has it.” Bertram’s sharp reply came from the other end.
“Yes, sir,” I responded immediately, but something in his voice made me question it. “Is that all?”
A pause came from the other end before his voice resounded in my ear once more. “It looks like Red John.”
I had to work to keep the emotion out of my voice as I replied. “Yes sir.”
Immediately, Jane knew something was amiss and he fired off questions as soon as I hung up the phone. “What’s going on, Lisbon?”
I took a deep breath before locking eyes with him. “Red John, I have to get everyone else. Meet me in the car.”
As soon as Red John came for my lips, Jane’s face transformed back into the mask I knew all too well. “Where?”
“Downtown, 1226 Conway Drive.”
“I’ll meet you there.” And then he was gone.
~Author’s Note~
And… that’s a wrap for now! :D This chapter was really just a set up for the next one, so before you say it, that’s why it’s so short :D
Hope you guys enjoyed this little chapter because it’s about to get spicy from here! I got a huge thing coming up in the next chapter and I already have some of it written so it shouldn’t be too long before the next update!
