Chapter 12

They all left Shawarma, and were shocked to see a crowd forming, cheering for them. But when they saw Loki, they started screaming, throwing curses at him.
"Monster!"
   "You killed my boyfriend!"
   "Die, you devil!"
   Athena winced at the comments, while Loki and the others kept a blank look on their faces. Athena casted an invisible shield around them, silencing the people around them. But because of that, they were unaware of the people grabbing Loki, bringing him onto his knees. Athena turned at the sound of Loki's cry, and saw a man had a gun to Loki's head.
   "No!" Athena exclaimed, dashing to them.
   "Athena, no!" Thor cried, trying to reach out to her. But it was too late.
   Everything was like it was in slow motion; Athena moved in front of Loki, wrapping her arms protectively around his neck, burying his face in her chest, just in time when the man with the gun pulled the trigger.
   Athena's shield was cut off, but they could hear silence from the crowd, except Athena and Loki's heavy breathing. Athena pulled away from him slightly, her arms still around his neck. "Loki. . ." she barely whispered out, before collapsing on his chest. Still handcuffed, Loki couldn't do anything but let her lean against him. Loki placed his head on her shoulder and saw blood seeping through her outfit.
   "Athena?" he panicked. "Athena, stay awake!"
   A girl screamed, the same girl Athena saved, staring at Athena in horror. "She's bleeding!" she cried. She then turned to the man with the gun. "You shot my hero!"
   People started screaming, while the man with the gun dropped the weapon, the people holding Loki down backed away. "Athena!" Loki still cried out to her. He turned to the frozen Avengers. "Release me, now!"
   "What?" Stark snapped out of his state.
   "Release me!" Loki yelled. "I need to save her, she's losing too much blood."
   "Loki is right." Thor said. "Release him."
   "But -"
   "Release me or I swear on Odin's beard, if you don't let me save her, I will come back to kill you all for not letting me!" Loki snarled. "RELEASE ME!" he screamed, silencing the crowd. Steve quickly gave the keys to Thor, who used them to unlock Loki. Loki quickly went into action, and wrapped his arms around her.
   "It's okay." he whispered shakily to her. "You're gonna live. Stay awake, love." Loki hovered his hand around her wound, the other hand supporting her weight. "Please," he choked out, ignoring the crowd at the sight of his vulnerability, "please stay alive. You're all I have now. Please wake up my love."
   "She's a goddess though, so she'll be fine, right?" Natasha said hopefully. Thor shook his head sadly.
   "When exhausted, we can die easier like mortals." Thor explained, watching as his adoptive brother tried healing her, while crying out words of encouragement and comfort.
   "I-I'll try and get us some transport from here." Natasha said. "It looks like Loki won't move Athena from their spot."
"I'll try and get the crowd to leave and give us some space." Tony said, Steve agreeing along with Clint. The three went over to the crowd and went to escort them away. Bruce hesitantly made his way to Loki and Athena with Thor, seeing Loki healing her with a look of panic and fear on his face.
"Is it healing?" Bruce hesitantly asked Loki. Loki didn't answer, and instead buried his face in her shoulder, while still healing her.
"I love you." they heard Loki say. "I love you so much. Please my love, wake up."
"Loki. . ." Thor placed his hand on top of Loki's head gently. "Athena shall live, I promise you that. She's a strong warrior, she'll survive."
Minutes passed, everyone recruited outside of Shawarma, paramedics ready, only to see Bruce and Thor slumped over in defeat, with Loki sobbing loudly. "What happened?" Stark asked the two. Their faces told them what had happened.
"No. . ." Steve looked at the mourning criminal sadly. Loki was hunched over with Athena in his arms still, cradling her to his chest, his hands covered with her blood in an attempt to save her. Everyone was speechless.
"Director. . ." Natasha said to her earpiece. "Athena. . .she um. . .she didn't make it." Silence was on the other side.
"What about Loki?"
"He's -" Natasha was cut off when Loki released a loud bloodcurdling scream of agony, before crying into Athena's hair.
"Wake up!" they heard him say through his cries. "Wake up!" Everyone flinched when he screamed a loud painful one again, and they all managed to dodge a flying car that went their way.
"Like all sorcerers, their magic goes haywire when emotional." Thor said sadly, tears gathering in his eyes.
"Loki's a wreck." Natasha said quietly to Fury. "We don't think he'll cooperate after this."
"Well. . .get him now. We'll organise a funeral for Athena."
Natasha turned to the others and some agents. "Fury said to grab Loki now. We will organise a funeral for Athena later on."
"Natasha wait!" Steve protested. "Loki is mourning!"
"And after that he will go ballistics and kill us soon." Tony retorted. "She's right, we have to get him before it's too late."
"Just give him some more time!" Thor argued. "That's Loki's lover."
Unaware of their argument, Loki leaned his forehead against Athena's. "You listen to me." Loki whispered, while trying to control his tears. "You are not dead. You hear me? You will not leave me just when I got you back after two years, thinking you were dead. Please. Please wake up, my love." A tear fell down onto Athena, landing on her cheek. Too busy mourning, Loki didn't notice the slight twitch of her hand, and the way his tear had been absorbed by her skin. Thor noticed but simply waved it off, thinking he imagined it.
Loki was roughly pulled away by some SHIELD agents, much to his dismay. "LET ME GO!" he screamed, struggling in their grasps. "RELEASE ME AT ONCE YOU MEWLING QUIMS!" Loki struggled to go to Athena. "Athena!" he cried. "Athena!" Loki turned to Thor. "Brother, please! Don't make them do this to me! You know how much she means to me!" All Thor did was look down sadly at the ground.
Before he could use his magic, he was handcuffed again, all magic taken away from him. He collapsed on the ground defeated, sobbing. He looked up and saw everyone look at him with pity. He then grew very angry. "You traitor!" Loki spat to Thor. "You chose these mortals over your own brother!"
"I'm sorry -" Thor whispered.
"I HATE YOU!" Loki screamed at him while being pulled away. "IF YOU TRULY LOVED ME BROTHER, YOU WOULD HAVE FOUGHT MORE FOR ME!" Loki was pulled on more aggressively, now that he was picking up a fight. "I will kill all of you!" he hissed. "How dare you take me away from the love of my life!"
"Someone sedate him." one of the SHIELD agents grunted. Another agent came by with a syringe, and stabbed it in Loki's neck.
"No!" Loki protested. "Athena, Athena!" Loki fell to the ground, his eye sight turning blurry. "No!" he breathed out. "Athena. . ." Loki was soon met with darkness.
