Monday morning. It started like usual for me, breakfast at eight, over to the Sheriff Station for nine. But by ten, things changed. My mobile rang. That's weird I think as I fish through the paperwork to find my phone. Usually when I'm at work, people phone the landline here, not my mobile. I finally find my phone buried underneath outstanding reports on crime Regina had ordered months ago and frown as I see that Dr Whale's calling. I bite my tongue trying not to panic as I know Dr Whale's in charge of Storybrook's hospital and Regina's under his care!! I wipe my hands on my jeans and shakily answer the phone. "Um hi? Is everything OK?" I ask. I hear a crackle and soft sigh "Emma , you need to get down here, with Henry if possible. Regina has taken a turn for the worst....". I don't hear the rest of what Dr Whale said, as my phone clatters to the floor as I make a frantic dash for the door, my car and then the school. 10 minutes later Henry and I screech into the hospital where Whale is waiting for us.
"I'm so glad you could get here Emma" he says, leading us into a private room. Henry is clinging to my side like a limpet and I pull him onto my lap as we sit down. "It's not good news Im afraid. I'm so sorry Henry but your mum's heart is failing. She doesn't have long left and will die." I hear Henry scream and hold him tightly as he breaks down in my arms, fighting with all his might to make the words Whale has spilled into the world vanish from his memory. " She can't die" he howls and I will myself to stay strong as I feel my resolve cracking.
We stay by Reginas bedside day and night for a week. Henry's pulled from school and spends all his time reading to his mum. He curls up next to her at night and begs her to wake up, to recover, to live but after 7 long days Regina finally succumbed to her injuries. The Mayor of Storybrook is dead.....
