Chapter 3: Back to the Caves

That creature had haunted me, and now I’m going to haunt it, track it down, and see that it dies a painful death. The everlasting desire for the creature’s blood is the only thing that kept me going, my once angelic heart, now blackened by the creature’s shadow. I needed to find it.

I felt like the devil had devoured my soul, and was powering me to kill. I just wanted the nightmares to stop; every night he would pick off the pack, one by one until I was alone, then he devour my heart and spread the darkness across my life-less body. Cold blooded unseen. Murder. The creature would never cease haunt me even if I did hunt it, and kill it. Why I had been taken aback by the creature’s appearance, I cannot say, but I can say this, I almost took my life, now I must take its life…

I needed to prepare, I went outside to retrieve the sword that I had dropped, and discovered it to be gone.

“D***, that creature!” I burst out; I was going back to the caves. I snatched the cracked iron pickaxe off of my forging table, turned and ran towards the cart room. The squeal of the un-oiled tracks ringing my ears sparks flying off the wheels. When I reached my destination I was so dazed by the ride that I hardly noticed, I dismounted the cart, shaking, without my good sword I was unconfident and scared of what lurked behind each corner lighting everything not once, not twice, but three times. A demon bird (bat) flew past my head, I screamed…

“AUGH!!!”

I couldn’t believe the amount of things that were out to get me. Then across a large pool of lava I saw what made my troubles worth it… DIAMONDS!!! I froze, unsure what to do, if there was lava underneath it would all be a waste of time and effort, but on the upside there was the chance that I could have a bounty of at least three diamonds. Another bat (demon bird) flew down from a stalactite that hung over head; it glided too low and was swallowed by the gurgling mass that was lava. Satisfied by the demon bird (bat)’s death, I poured my water over the lava, and it turned to obsidian with a hiss. I checked my back, waiting for the creature to come, but instead I found a giant green monster with four legs and a long, tall body. It started to sizzle, its body expanding wildly, “No!” I screamed, trying to make my legs work, but my feet were glued to the ground. The monster exploded, leaving only rubble and little bits and pieces of the creature behind.

I looked back to the diamonds and found five of pre-mined diamonds sitting on the ground. I reached over to pick them up and set them in my bag. I sprinted back to the cart room, my bag in hand; I heaved the old iron cart on to the rail, and started the engine. The cart whirred back to life and I started the precarious climb back to the surface. Breathing hard I walked slowly back to the house, by the time I made it to my room it was dusk. Gratefully I fell back on to the soft bed, exhausted.

I woke up with a start, snatching my bag and rushing downstairs to the forge. I grabbed some iron rods and made a hilt; I carefully sanded off the stone and granite fragments and cleaned the diamonds. Next I fused two together to make a long rod, then I sanded the edges to make the blade sharp on all sides, then I attached the blade to the hilt and put the family seal on it.
