"Auburn, did you find the box of decorations?" Alex calls from down the hall.
She appears at the foot of my door, a decrepit old baby doll head cradled in her palm. "Think fast!" She shouts and chucks the plastic head at me, hitting my shoulder and tumbling to the floor.
"Curse my slow reflexes!" I giggle, and shove the massive cardboard box toward her feet.
"I've already put some up, it's looking pretty spoopy so far though." I comment, and gesture to the few decorations I'd hung up.
"Spoopy? Is that even a real word? Stick to your day job." She comments, lightly slapping my cheek.
She shuffles around the old hotel ballroom, admiring the long abandoned room.
"So, you think this place is haunted?" Alex asks, emphasizing the word haunted.
"Maybe—" I'm interrupted by a howl in pain.
"Auburn!" A boy calls from downstairs, Cameron.
I sprint down the staircase to find Cameron, clutching his bleeding foot.
"Oh my god, Cam! What happened?" I kneel down to inspect his foot.
He simply points to the nail sticking out of the ancient floorboards, and bites his lip to keep from wailing in pain again.
"Great idea Auburn, host your halloween party at an old hotel that's been abandoned for years." He deadpans, his hands have become completely soaked with sticky deep red blood.
"I'll be right back, I'm gonna go look for something to bandage your foot with. It's not too bad, so I can make due with whatever I find until later. Hang tight, I'll be right back." I call out as I race back up the stairs in search for a bandage.
As I sprinted up the stairs, I'd managed to collide with Alex and knock us both to the floor.
"Dude!" Alex groaned, and hoisted herself from the the floor.
"Alex, I'm so sorry!" I exclaimed, and helped her up.
"Cameron, stepped on a nail and I came to find something to bandage his foot with." I explained, and scoured the room for something to stop Cameron's bleeding.
I sift through the box of unused decorations, finding a random scrap of fabric.
This will have to do.
I dash back down the spiral staircase to tend to Cameron's cut.
"I found something, this should work for now. But later, we'll have to get you a real bandage." I explain, and wrap the fabric strip tightly around his foot and the bleeding soon slows.
"Thanks, Aubs." He says lifting himself from the wood floors, and I cringe at the dreaded nickname he'd given me.

We'd finally set everything up, and I have to admit that it looked extremely realistic. The theme for this year was haunted hotel, so we had our work cut out for us.
"Guys, this looks awesome!" Alex exclaims, spinning around to admire our hard work.
"Nice work, guys!" Cameron hopped over toward us and high-fived, his foot had finally stopped bleeding but was still sore.
We didn't need to add much more to complete the whole haunted hotel look, because that's supposedly what this was.
We'd covered what little furniture was still left with white sheets to add to the abandoned look that was already there. In addition we'd hung some creepy portraits, hooked up the black lights, and scattered various things like fake skeletons, candelabras and other scary props.
I told Alex to start sending out reminders that the party was tonight and that they needed to wear their costume. Cameron and I did some recovery, trying to get him to stand and walk on his foot again.
"Make sure all the food is set out for more than two hundred people, we got a large party on our hands!" Alex calls from upstairs.
