Chapter Five
I almost got lost on the drive home. I accidentally pulled into the driveway before mine which only made things awkward when I had to turn around. I found myself pulled up in front of a smaller, more run down, white house with a white picket fence in the front yard. The gravel driveway seemed to go on further, beyond where the house and barn were. I saw two tractors and then a very familiar head of black hair. "Shit! Shit! Shit!" I whisper-yelled to myself, frantically trying to turn around. So this was my new neighbor: Nixon. He must have left right away after our encounter at the gas station.
Finally I had my car turned around and sped as fast back up the gravel driveway as possible. The speed almost gave me the same adrenaline rush as I'd get at the races, only not nearly as exciting. My heart was beating fast when I finally pulled into my own driveway and parked the car right outside the extension. I got out and carried my groceries into the kitchen of the extension. After I had put all of the food away I collapsed on the surprisingly very comfy couch in front of the five o'clock news.
My phone buzzed in my pocket, waking me from my hour of slumber. I pulled it out of my jeans and looked at the unknown caller ID. I swiped at the touch screen to unlock it and pressed open on the text. My heart beat faster in my chest as I read the text,
9301 Casey Lane, 8pm
I knew exactly where that was. In fact, it wasn't too far from here. It was actually a dirt road about a mile or two down the highway heading away from Highbell. It literally was the perfect place for a race. The dirt would make for great drifting. My adrenaline started pumping just at the thought of it. I found myself getting up off the couch and heading upstairs to grab my makeup and get ready for the race. I knew no one would see my face except for before and after anyways, but I couldn't help but hope that maybe one day, everyone would know it was me who kept winning all of these class-A races.
When I walked into the bathroom, I instantly smiled at the old, baby blue shower curtain with little sail boats on it that covered the generic, white bathtub. It was from my old house when I was in elementary school. When I entered middle school, that was when everything changed.
Mom and dad split up because he caught her cheating on him with her boss and he moved out to his apartment that he still lives in today. That's when he started drinking. Mom still had all of her wealth and eventually broke it off with her boss, but that just escalated to more and more men. My grades started to slip and I stopped going home. That was when I was still besties with my old girl friend group. Yes, I used to be a girly girl who wore pink, did my nails, got straight A's, and had slumber parties with the best of them.
When life started to crumble around me, though, it was as if none of them could understand. Dad understood, but he was too drunk most of the time to understand. I was walking home one day in the rain, slowly so that I didn't have to spend any more time at home than necessary, when someone started walking behind me. I didn't see them at first, but I felt them behind me, watching me intently. Finally, I turned around and my eyes landed on a taller guy with beautiful dark eyes and black hair that was short and perfectly combed. He wore jeans that fit him perfectly and a white t-shirt that was now soaked and sticking to him. His black backpack was slung over one shoulder, as was mine. My hair was knotty and messed up, dripping from the rain and my face was still in its middle school phase which meant I was attempting to wear makeup but it sort of failed. "What do you want?" I asked him.
