Chapter Four

Fluorescent light pierced my vision when I finally opened my eyes. I squinted around the white room, seeing the white shades drawn away from the tall window and the whiteboard with my name, patient number and medication dosage written on it. I wasn't attached to any fancy machines with wires, so I figured I must be free to go. Although I was slightly disappointed that there was no concerned family member or best friend next to my bed when I woke up, I was mainly concentrated on getting the hell out of there and as quickly as possible. I was probaby late for school and I knew mom and dad were sure to kill me if they found out.

Just as I was about to step through the door frame of my hospital room, my body collided with another person. "Whoa, slow down, there," an all too familiar female voice said.

I sighed, making eye contact with my mother. "What are you doing here?"

"I was the only parent notified," she said shortly to me, guiding me back into the room with a harsh hand on my shoulder. "And you haven't been released, yet."

"So?" I said. "I have to go."

"Go where?" she asked.

"To school?" I said, questionably.

She shook her head. "I called you out for the next two days. Besides, we need to discuss a few things."

I raised my eyebrows. "Such as?"

"Well, maybe discuss is not the right word," she said almost mischievously. "You are coming to live with me full time, now. You have until the end of tomorrow to get your things moved in. I just moved out to the country into a bigger house and it's not too far from a little lake and your new school."

"You have got to be joking," I said in disbelief.

"Reese," she said rather sternly. "Based on your behaviour these past few months, I have to assume that your environment is not helping you change. You need a change of scenery and I've signed you up for summer classes at your new school. I'm requiring you get a job of some kind, grades of B's or higher, and a clean record by the end of the summer. If you fail to do so I'm shipping your ass off to Maine with your grandmother. Maybe that'll teach you a lesson or two. Consider this your last warning."

I sat on the edge of the hospital bed, letting all of this sink in as she got up and left the room, saying, "Now you can leave."

I sat there, staring at the tiles on the ground in shock and contemplation as to whether I could really do everything she was asking of me. A job wouldn't be too hard to find; I'd just look for one at a local skate shop. The other two requirements seemed a bit far fetched and out of grasp, though. I decided I'd have to find a way to keep up with school and a way to stay out of trouble. In the back of my mind I knew I'd have to give up the races, considering they're highly illegal and I've already been arrested from one once before.

I was already signed up to race this Friday, though. It was a rare race, considering it was going to be on a Friday rather than a Saturday night. The top racers in the county were going to be racing which was about four people, including me. The thing about racing, though, is that none of the guys I race know I'm actually a girl. They all think I'm a guy, considering the windows of my car are extremely dark and I'm always wearing a helmet. The only people who know it's me are Patterson, Trent and Nick. The rest of the guys have no idea.
