Waking

For a week, Gajeel stayed by the girl's side, eagerly and curiously watching the transformation happening before his very eyes.

The venom flowing through her system had sealed every wound, mending her skin and leaving soft, pink scars that could hardly be seen. Soon, color began to return to the girl's cheeks and the tips of her ears began to point slightly. Her small chest rose and fell smoothly after four days, the first two days full of pained and shallow breaths. Now, with her body completely healed, she looked like a porcelain doll.

Gajeel looked up at the soft knock on the door to the room, the scent that wafted from the small space under the wood telling him it was his friend, Pantherlily, coming to check on him.
"How is she?" Lily asked asked as he came into the room. Pantherlily was a tall dark-skinned vampire who'd been Gajeel's closest companion from almost day one.

Gajeel looked down at the sleeping girl. "She's getting close to waking up," he said simply and Lily nodded.

"What do you plan on doing with her? You changed her, so you must have a sort of plan, am I right?" Lily asked.
Gajeel was silent for a moment before answering with an almost sorrowful, "I don't know."
Lily scowled, making the scar over his left eye crinkle slightly. "What do you mean you don't know?" He demanded, making Gajeel's eyes snap up angrily and lock with Lily's honey-golden eyes.

Any normal vampire would've backed away from the temperamental vampire at the sight of the fire in Gajeel's eyes. If it were anyone but Lily, they'd have been torn apart on the spot. But Lily knew Gajeel wouldn't touch him unless Gajeel wanted a missing limb. The limb would grow back since Gajeel possessed the ability to regenerate quickly, but the pain of growing back an entire arm or leg was unbearable, even for a vampire.

Gajeel and Lily glared at each other for several moments before Gajeel sighed. "I don't have any idea what to do with a new vampire. I never thought I would sire so I never paid attention to Metallicana after he turned me," Gajeel grumbled irritably. Lily tilted his head, his golden eyes flashing with both concern and slight amusement for his friend.

"Well I guess you wish you had listened," Lily chuckled, making Gajeel hiss angrily for having his companion rub the situation in his face. "But seriously, you should listen to your gut when the time comes. A newborn vampire is like a human child: the teaching methods that work for one fledgling does not always work for another. Your main concern should be that she learns not to feed off of humans when unnecessary."

Gajeel's ruby-red eyes had drifted away from Lily's eyes and focused in on the sleeping girl's face. He knew that Lily spoke the truth but still was worried. What if he failed and she turned rogue, slaughtering humans mercilessly? Old Man Makarov would force Gajeel to kill his own fledgling and the pain accompanying such a task was the equivalent of a human parent having to bury their own child. And there were some cases where an older vampire and their underling would turn out to be mates and a couple of those stories ended with one vampire having to kill their beloved. Both were paths that Gajeel had never wanted to experience.

All this ran through Gajeel's head in a matter of moments, distracting him long enough to not hear the sudden, sharp intake of breath from the subject of his thoughts. It was the soft groan of someone just waking up that caught his attention. His head snapped to the left to see the girl shift slightly under her covers and stretch widely. Gajeel held his breath as he watched her still for a moment before her eyes finally opened, revealing sparkling red eyes that every fledgling possessed for the first several weeks of their new life.

So this has been in the works for several months and I've finally finished chapter 1. Hopefully y'all like it. Please be aware that this is my first time writing anything like this so any pointers would be helpful and... yeah. Let me know how y'all liked it, please.
