Melanie's POV
As I walk back into the barn, I see Penny pawing.

"No, no, girlie." I say. "It's a bad habit to paw."

She gives me a look of confusion.

Despite the very recent discovery of "shifters", I couldn't be mean to my baby. I mean, I've seen so much abuse. Three of my horses come from the kill pen. I wanted to take them all home.

"I'll take you out again tomorrow, okay?" I say.

I unclip her halter and I couldn't help but notice that her halter didn't have the throat latch clipped on.

I brushed it off thinking it was my mistake.

I lead her back to her stall, then go into the feed room to prepare her feed.

Three quarters of Alfalfa Pellets, one scoop of Omelene, and her SmartPak supplements.

I add a cookie or two for treats. (Don't tell John, he doesn't give the horses treats unless he's trick training.)

I walk back to her stall and pour her feed into the built-in feeding compartment on the wall.

I close the door and walk over to the hay bales and grab three flakes of coastal hay and one thin flake of Alfalfa.

Shoving that into a hay net, and closing the top I walk back to her stall and tie it up on the ring.

I make sure to check her automatic waterers for any malfunction.

I give her a kiss on the whorl on her forehead.

"Goodnight, baby girl." I coo.

I walk back to John and tell him I'm going to the house.

As I'm walking to the golf cart, I think.

What is going on? She can't be a 'shifter'. Maybe it's John just playing a prank on me.

I get in the golf cart and turn the key.

Dun-dun-dun-dun-dun.

Dammit.

The god damn golf cart is out of gas.

I groan, and step out of the golf cart.

I'm too lazy to fill it up now so I just walk to the house.

I guess it gives me more time to think.
