I hunched down closer to the ground and crawled towards the table where I left my gun. I only had a few bullets left, so I had to make them count. I knew the zombie was coming closer. It's gurgly screeches were getting louder and louder with each step. Quickly I grabbed the gun and shot at the zombie. One bullet hit through the hole where it's eye used to be and the other it's forehead. Instantly it fell to the floor with a loud thud. I walked over to the zombie to examine if it was still alive. When I looked down at the thing, it was hard to tell it ever used to be human. Now that I was closer to it, I could tell that it was a female.
Her eyes -well, eye- was the only thing that told you she used to be human. It was a beautiful. A gentle ivory green with flecks of yellow running along the edge. Everything else was plain gross. The skin was a tinted yellow, like the kind you see when you piss. I know, I know. Way to ruin the dramatic moment. It looked rotted and gave off a gut wrenching stench. Her hair was barely there anymore. It was just patches of little hair that wasn't visible if you weren't as close as I was. Parts of her body was missing. Her nose, left arm, and left foot was gone.
This was my life now, killing zombies and running for my life. Mine, Amara Brielle but I go by Ara. Five months earlier a rare kind of rabies broke out. It originated from, you guessed it, a scientist lab. They were trying to cross breed a sloth and a dog, but the dog happened to have a special kind of rabies. Mix a dog with rare rabies and a dirty sloth, you get the perfect zombie disease. The crossbreed gave the scientists it's special mixed rabies and the scientists rapidly spread the rabies to everyone else.
So far I've found five survivors. Two were eaten by the zombies. The last died from loss of blood. The other two are practically my family now. Cage Wright is two years older than me. I'm fifteen years old. He has hazel eyes and blonde hair. His skin is a perfect shade of tan. All of our skin are tan now from spending such a long time walking in the sun. Cage was the first person I found. Well it was more like he found me. Vera Nelson was the last person we found and is thirteen. She has dark brown hair with honey streaks and beautiful brown eyes. I, like i said am fifteen. Turning sixteen in exactly one week. (I've kept track of the date) I have natural jet black hair and sea green eyes. My mom said that I was very unique before she turned into a zombie herself.
Looking at the zombie that was once a beautiful human reminded me of my mother. Tears started streaking my dirty face. I used the back of my hand to wipe my eyes before anyone could see me.
"Ara?" I turned to see Cage staring at me with worry. From the look of his face I could tell he understood the pain I was feeling. He came over to hug me. "Is it your mom?" He asked me softly. The only thing I ever cried about was my mom. I nodded and swallowed the lump growing in my throat. I backed up and took a deep, shaky breath. I had to be strong for Vera. She wasn't used to seeing me like this and if she did, she would freak out.
"Ara" Vera ran down the broken steps without even slowing down for safety. "I found a bunch of clothes upstairs and a backpack!" She dropped the armload of clothes she was holding onto the table. I hurried to compose myself.
"Vera" I said. "We can't take all of that with us. It's way too much" She dropped her gaze down to the floor with disappointment. She knew better than to take a load of clothes with us. It would just slow us down. I packed up the food I found in our backpacks along with a few clothes and bottles of water.
It was almost evening and I wanted to get some miles in before we camped out somewhere. I took one last look at the piece of paper that had the location of the Safe House the government set up.
"You guys ready?" I asked my friends. They both got their backpacks and put it on their backs. Cage gave me a small nod. Vera prepped up and got the two guns we found in the abandoned house. I grabbed my handgun and put it in my belt loop. I opened the door and scanned the place. This was my life. And I intended to make it last.
