I am laying upside down with my head hanging off of the lab operating table. Joseph is still droning on about the NTC project. I don't know if he realizes this, but neither Coach or I are interested anymore.
"The way that this works is-," Joseph says.
"Okay, I get it. I am a slave and I am stuck obeying your every whim. Can I please go for a run now?" I interrupt.
"Ok, I guess we should test the module and see if it is water resistant. If it is, then we can start to work on implanting it in to your neck." I couldn't help but notice that Joseph neatly dodged the task of answering the part about me being a slave.
"I thought that it already was."
"No, I mean that we could work on making it less visible."
"Oh."
"So, what distance do you have in mind?"
"Oh, not far, only lie, 3 miles."
"3 MILES!?"
"What, it isn't that far!"
"Ok, I guess."
As soon as I hear that, I start getting stretched out. I realize as I do this that I am in a white hospital gown.
"Umm, is there anything more suitable for running in?"
"I've got your duffle bag with all your running clothes, Madison," Coach says.
Coach hands me my blue duffle and I pick out my black running capris and my pink spotted top. I also grab my running shoes and a pair of my lime green and purple striped gray socks with the cushioned bottoms. I get dressed behind a curtain. I then finish stretching out, and I go out. Just as Coach starts me, I freeze. Yep. I'm a slave. Joseph presses a button and a map pops into my vision.
"This is the course you are to run. If you get more than 3 yards off of the line, you will freeze. This is just a precaution, as earlier you demonstrated a will to escape."
I unfreeze, and I take a tumble. However, I catch myself, and Coach re-starts me.
"On your marks..... GO!"
I take off running. A timer pops up in the corner of the map. I find it annoying that I have to rely on a map that I can't even really see. I run straight into a tree and stumble. I wish that there was some way to overlay the map with my sight.
